Eatin' Crow Tonite!

Eatin' Crow Tonite!

Glad there is nobody around to read my in game rant about the punchless Wings tonite. After going 15 scoreless innings against Lehigh, and getting blanked on 2 hits by Jason Marquis (yeah, him), someone finally kicked the team in their collective asses and they started to awaken the slumbering lumber.
Trailing 4-0 in the 7th, they finally broke thru with a walk, a triple by Hermann and an RBI ground out by Nelson.
However, Lehigh scored another in the bottom of the 7th, when Rohlfing couldn't handle strike three and that was followed by an RBI double to make it 5-2.

Top of the 8th with one out, the Wings went back to work. With a couple runners on and two away Colabello finally came up with a clutch two out hit to make it 5-3. Hermann worked a walk to load the bases and Nelson slammed the first pitch to the left field fence for a bases clearing double and the Wings took the lead 6-5. Thompson and Pressly retired the Pigs without incident in the 8th and 9th and the Wings had an  unexpected, but needed victory.

They return home to face Norfolk tomorrow. Meyer gets another chance to try and get untracked.

Anyone care to explain the strange strange saga of Aaron Hicks????

Since the organization can't explain themselves, there's no way any one of us could explain our handling this man's development.   There simply was no rhyme or reason and completely senseless to going "all-in" on Aaron Hicks when we had actually two (2) proven, ready-for-prime-time center fielders.  All we had to do was choose one - probably Revere - and let the Aaron Hicks and Byron Buxtons of this world, stay down and develop their games.

In one word:  GOOFY.

amen brutha!! Totally on board.
Wouldn't you love to get Revere back? And I still am angry that they literally gave away Mastroianni, for absolutely nothing. The guy they got is long gone. Mastro is a great depth player who never got half the chances that they gave Hicks. (now he is terrorizing us in Buffalo, for the Jays organization)

As for the Wings game last night...it was a nice comeback but, like the Twins, this is happening far too much and its low percentage for success. Wings are home against Norfolk this weekend...a team historically we have had little success against in recent years. Rochester is flawed and injured right now. I hope some home cooking will get them out of their funk. First place seems pretty much out for now...Syracuse is very strong and has a comfortable 5 game lead. Comfortable because Rochester can't mount any kind of win streak.

Colabello is still not the Colabello of 2013 by a long shot...but he does contribute once in awhile. The most serious problem is he strikes out way too much. And if it happens down here...its not going to be any better if he is ever recalled. It would be great if both he and Nelson could heat up together. Romero is hot and cold. Cold right now. Ramirez is on the DL and before ending up there, he was ice cold. Pinto is now hurt. Hermann was back last night and that will help. Young Dan Ortiz has come up large on a few occasions...but needs to be a bit more consistent. I suspect the Wings will be keeping him however.

Alex Meyer, of whom much is expected, tries again tonite to turn it around. He has taken several major steps backwards in June. Too many deep counts and inability to finish off hitters. Gilmartin is at best just a substitute. Diamond is a trainwreck this year. Showing no signs of improvement as a starter.

Hey--we have a Hamburger in the bullpen!!!!

Of course.  You know me and you know how I blasted this from DAY 1.  Revere is miles better than anything we've got trotting out there and seems to be undervalued by Rhino in Philly.  He's "only" hitting about .289, running amok on the base paths and catching everything his way in CF, but apparently his plate discipline is questioned (eek1).

Unfortunately, I think Sandberg (not Ben Revere) is the one that'll be run out of town shortly...

If the Twins were buyers and not sellers on the 31st...I wonder if Philly would have made him available? As it is, Twins and Phils are probably in that same leaky boat. Except Gardy is teflon.
I don't want to revise my expectations just yet...I think if they can somehow get healthy again, .500 is an attainable (and worthwhile) goal for this year.
