Twins Signed Kendrys Morales

http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/2622 43811.html

The Twins have added Kendrys Morales, a potent bat for the middle of their lineup, a Twins source confirmed to the Star Tribune after a report by CBSSports.com. The Twins have not officially confirmed the report, first disclosed by Jon Heyman, and spokesman Dustin Morse says the team anticipates making no announcements today.

Morales, who hit 23 home runs for the Mariners last season, was a free agent last offseason, but never signed because his new team would have to surrender a draft pick as compensation. With the draft passed, that requirement is lifted, and the Twins won't forfeit anything for adding the 30-year-old first baseman/designated hitter.

Morales seems likely to become the Twins' new DH, once he joins the team, presumably after a minor-league stint to get up to speed. Morales missed the entire 2011 season after breaking an ankle during a celebration of a walk-off home run while with the Angels. But he hit 34 homers with the Angels in 2009, finishing fifth in the MVP voting won by new teammate Joe Mauer.

According to Jerry Crasnick of espn.com, Morales signed a one-year contract for "in the ballpark" of $10 million. Morales can become a free agent again, with no compensation strings attached, after the season.

The signing is the strongest indication yet that the Twins consider the AL Central within reach this year; Minnesota opened the day in last play in the five-team division, but only five games behind first-place Detroit. The Twins visit Detroit next weekend.

The Twins have not confirmed the report and won't today, perhaps because Morales would be required to undergo a physical first. In addition, the Twins will have to make a roster move to make room.

Just read this as well. If its confirmed and he is healthy, this may spell the end of the line in Minnesota for struggling Jason Kubel, or Chris Parmelee. Can't see both of them hanging around anymore being as unproductive as they have become. Thought maybe he would replace Willingham but maybe not at the moment. Might even move Joe M to the bench for some games??

It's now official that Kubel has been designated for assignment to make room for Morales.

I always liked Kubel and was happy for him when he got off to a solid start, but he has struggled mightily and it was clear that he wasn't the answer as the DH.   If Morales can replicate his past success, his presence in the lineup should make the Twins' offense more dangerous than it was with Kubel in the lineup.

Meanwhile, Johan Santana's year is done. Tore his Achilles...OUCH. I feel bad for this guy. A great pitcher, nice guy who just hasn't been able to get a break since leaving Minnesota. I think this guy is done.

It's a shame because I thought he had something left in the tank, and hoped the Twins would bring him back home.

Well, this is a strong indication that we see ourselves as competitive this year.  I like it and now hope we can add a starting pitcher to supplant Correia.

Farewell Jason Kubel.  It was nice to have you back for a 'curtain call' and wish you all the best in your life post baseball.

insteresting that sometimes our gut is correct....if you go back to some of my posts writing about concerns that Kubel and Colabello were in bad slumps...and they were poo-pooed....guess the chickens have come home to roost. Colabello needed time in AAA to right the sinking ship...and he MIGHT return. Kubel simply stopped hitting..I doubt any other team will pick him up and he probably won't accept an assignment to Rochester at this point. He might be done. Way too soon.
I predicted this move...not at all surprised.
Parmelee is next out the door....

Since Morales may not be ready to play for awhile, I wonder why they designated Kubel so soon? Won't that leave a spot open on the roster?

Starting to think this signing is looking like a Shannon Stewart deal.  Maybe Don Baylor like?  Settle the rotation down a bit and we could really be playoff bound.  The hitting is really coming around and there are plenty of replacement parts around.  No wonder they let Kubel go.

Sounds like the Twins really pulled a fast one in getting Morales. Apparently many other teams coveted him...not sure why he picked the Twins...but glad he did. He should help.

Wow - well, if he has the impact of a Shannon Stewart, TR will come off looking like a genius, right?  It's a good move, no denying (even if TR has pulled some real stinkers along the way).

Yes, Morales feels like the Cuban version of a Don Baylor, though KM is not in the twilight of his career - rather he should be peaking right now!  biggrin

Morales could end up being the missing piece the Twins need to crawl out of the AL Central abyss after 3 miserable years. What a hot start! Hope it continues. Like I said, a lot of teams coveted this guy and that makes it even more surprising that the uber-conservative Twins actually got him.

Fryer up to replace Pinto. He's an excellent defensive catcher who will hit better than a Sal Butera, but he isn't a real offensive threat. He's mostly solid though. He hasn't hurt the Wings.
