Big Honors for Chris Colabello

Big Honors for Chris Colabello

Yesterday Chris Colabello was named the I.L.'s Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year. The 29 year old from Framingham, Mass received 94% of the votes.
His .352 BA (assuming he stays with the Twins the rest of the week) will the highest for a Red Wing since Royle Stillman hit .354 in 1973...and the highest by a REd Wing batting champ since George 'high pockets' Puccinelli hit .391 in 1932.

Colabello becomes the 5th Red Wing to win both awards in the same year, joining Moby Mike Epstein (1966); Merv Rettenmund (1968); Roger Freed (1970)--the Wings had quite a run of super players during that stretch--and Rich Dauer in 1976.

He is the 14th Red Wing to win MVP--the last being Jeff Manto in 1994. He is also the 17th Wing to be named Rookie of the Year.

When hearing the news Colabello said he was honored from the bottom of his heart. "Rochester is a such a special place to me. ITs by far the place where I had the most fun in my career".

This is why I hope the Twins make sure he returns next season.

Manager Gene Glynn finished runner up to Charlie Monoya of Durham for manager of the year. I have to believe that had the Wings not flamed out at the end of this season, Glynn may have taken that award.

The IL All-Star Team:
Catcher Tony Sanchez of Indianapolis; 1B Colabello; 2B Cesar Hernandez of Lehigh; SS Zach Walters of Syracuse; 3B Cody Asche of Lehigh; Outfield: Nick Castellanos, Toledo, Billy Hamilton Louisville, Joey Terdoslavich Gwinnett. DH is Mauro Gomez of Buffalo; Utility is Vince Belnome of Durham. Pitcher is Jairo Asencio of Norfolk. Most Valuable Pitcher is JD Martin.

Re: Big Honors for Chris Colabello

That was announced during the Twins' broadcast last night.  Good for Colabello and for Rochester as well!
