Delmon Young Signs 1-Yr Deal for 750K!

Delmon Young Signs 1-Yr Deal for 750K!

The Phillies picked him up on the cheap, no doubt.

If we could have moved Willingham for pitching, I'd have loved getting back Delmon to play left fiedl for us, but obviously Delmon comes with a lot of baggage and no longer fits the mold in Minnesota.

Regardless of off-field antics, I do believe the Phillies made a good investment.

That is quite a drop in pay, I looked it up and he made $6.75M in 2012.

There are also performance bonuses included. I agree it was decent move by Phillies.

In regards to another former Twin's player Francisco Liriano broke his right arm

when he reportedly fell in a bathroom in his native Dominican Republic.

Sounds like his deal with the Pirates wasn't finalized yet pending a physical.

Delmon is quickly becoming one of those guys that will be changing teams every year despite being a decent player. Surprised an NL team would pick him up because you have to watch him play in the field... banghead

HELL NO! 1st of all, Willingham is a hitting machine. 2nd, Delmon can't field for ****, and is a locker-room disaster. That would have been the dumbest move the Twins could have done...moreso then trading both Span and Revere.

For the price, he may be nothing more than a pinch hitter and spot duty in the OF. I wouldn't want him to be a member of the Twins, but it would surely piss off Gardy more.
Meyer and May will be top of the rotation starters by 2015.

Fact is, pitching keeps you in games and I'd have pulled a trigger IF we could acquire a #2 from Atlanta.  I'd have pulled the trigger because it's a classic case of selling high and getting quality in return.  While I don't think Willingham's year was a fluke, I also believe it may be his best and age will not be his ally.

Let's face it fact:  Willingham and Delmon are roughly equal in the field.  No sugar-coating it:  Both are equally bad, neither is a prodigy and both make routine outs look adventuresome.  IMHO, it's a wash.

Secondly, folks somehow forget Young can flat out hit.  While his plate discipline is very questionable, there is no arguing his ability.  His last full year with us he hit .298, 21 homers and plated 112 of his teammates.

That said, yeah, he brings other qualities to a team that qualify as "baggage" and I'm guessing, Josh Willingham is probably the person and better teammate.

But alas, the point is totally moot...

PS

Did you know Delmon Young is Detroit's ALL-TIME leader in postseason home runs with 9?? eek

I don't think it can be argued that the man cannot hit and completely unlike A-Rod and Cano and a slew of others, Young has shown a propensity to shine in the postseason play.

Make no mistake, the Phillies picked him up to play everyday and he will produce.  The contract is heavily incentive laden it seems, but if Young keeps his nose clean, he'll no doubt provide value.

Re: Delmon Young Signs 1-Yr Deal for 750K!

At $750K, no risk.  He will do well for a little while then he'll do his own thing as usual, be uncoachable and look horrendous in the field.  I bet they think they got another Raul Ibanez, but they'll be quite sorry that they really didn't.  He can't hit .300 nor hit 20 HR.  His arm is actually pretty good, but getting to the ball is always a perilous adventure.  The only bad thing about trading him away was that we got so little for him while we traded so much to get him.  Two awful trades.

Not sure why folks can't see the man hitting .300 or hitting 20 home runs in a stadium where the left field foul pole is 329 feet from home plate.  Barring injury, he should be able to accomplish at least one of these feats.

Re: Delmon Young Signs 1-Yr Deal for 750K!

"His arm is actually pretty good,"  is an understatement.  You wont find to many outfielders with a stronger and more accurate arm than Delmon Young.  He is still only 27 years old and is a career .284 hitter.  He just hit 18 hr last season.  To say he is not capable of hitting 20 hr is a joke.  I would be willing to bet he will average 20 hr a year for the rest of his career if he plays 150 games a year.  His rookie season when he played right field he never looked as uncomfortable as he did with the Twins in left field.  He is going to be the Phillies every day right fielder and I think that is more of his natural position.  I havent looked at any of the stats, but I am willing to bet that the stats that some of these gurus use to rate defense Young> Willingham.   I think the Phillies got a steal and I agree with the poster that said we should trade Willingham. I also believe he just had his career year.  Young would have been a very serviceable replacement.

Alls I want for Christmas is Gardy gone!!!!

Finalized now.

"Francisco Liriano and the Pirates have agreed to a new two-year contract. Liriano will still make $12.75 million, the original value of the contract, if he isn't hindered by what turned out to be a broken non-pitching arm (the mysterious injury that scuttled the original deal). If that specific injury causes Liriano problems, his salary will decrease, although it isn't yet clear how much."

Two years and 12.75 million... That's worth it if he figures out his mechanics and can actually throw strikes...

This is a lot more closer to reality.

The Phillies imo made a shrewd move and tell me Delmon won't be trying hard to impress on and off the field in his one-year deal.  Apparently, with incentives, he can make as much as 3.5 million.

I'd bet anyone on here that if he does get 150 games in or more, he'd hit more than 20 HR's and/or hit .300.  Anyone like that wager?rolleyes  Anyone?

Smart man (obviously, you like money, as I do biggrin).

I was trying to see if ETCDel actually believes his own words and would stand by them, when he said:

He can't hit .300 nor hit 20 HR.

I don't make a living writing baseball pieces.  But neither do you. I don't feel anything written here has any true merit aside from accepting everything as one man's (or woman's) opinion.  My words or your words.  Plenty of spot on and way off predictions when we look back.  Do I want to put money where my mouth is, how exactly does that work?  I have plenty of money, don't think it makes much sense on a forum of opinion.  If you believe I'm not entitled to my opinion, then pound sand.  I'll say your opinion is about as valuable as mine.  This board is disintigrating into moronic banter of I'm smarter than you are and you don't make sense but I do.  I don't disagree that for $750K this is a good gamble, but at the same time, how does a former first rounder who apparently has such a high ceiling fall to a team offering such a low ball deal?  Virtually minimal guaranteed money sure says something about this guys market.  I don't think I'm the only guy with this opinion, particularly when if comes to GM's in this league because if they did think he could hit .300 and 20 HR's he'd be worth at least 5-7 million per year.

BTW, here's an interesting clause in Delmon's fat deal.

Ok, besides all the other silliness... you understand Delmon comes with a lot of baggage, right?  And you really know deep down that this is ONLY reason the Phillies got him at a discount.

How does a bet work?  It starts by your telling me what you're prepared to lose and we'll go from there...
