Well, the Dodgers finally escaped St. Louis with a win, but they have just as tough a challenge in going to Atlanta and playing the pesky Braves.
Schmidt didn't do very well in his last start, as he got shelled and chased by the power-hitting Marlins. But he has a chance to do better against the Braves, who are pretty much middle of the road in terms of offense, with more spread out average power even with Chipper Jones. It is apparent that Schmidt isn't going to blow anybody away, so location and pitch selection is absolutely crucial to whether or not Schmidt pitches again as a Dodger. Mix up your pitches, get movement on your breaking balls, and hope the balls find their way into a Dodger glove.
The offense faced a very good quad of Cardinals pitchers, and they immediately delve into facing who many are calling the next best young pitcher in baseball (along with Kershaw). Tommy Hanson was rated the #1 prospect this year, and he certainly has not disappointed. This will be Hanson's 11th start, and the Braves are 7-3 when he does take the mound. It's not so much that his stuff is unhittable ('only' 37 Ks in 55 innings), but that teams are already taking an approach at swinging fairly early in the count because he's so good. Hanson's matured already to the point (especially recently) where he relies moreso on his defense than his own stuff, which has turned beneficial for him. Hanson's only real complaint (like all young pitchers) is his walk total. Given how the Dodgers struggled immensely in the previous series in crucial moments with RISP, the initial outlook isn't great for tonight. But that's why they play the game, right? If the Dodgers can knock in a few, and make young Tommy Hanson work, they can make it 2 in a row.
GO BLUE!

if Schmidt is decent tonight, he earns another start.
he bombs tonight, Dodger career over.
there is no in-between.

there is no in-between. Agree here. I am not impressed so far, and we have multiple kids who deserve a shot (and possibly the showcasing).

Lets hope Schmidt has anything left in the tank. I think most of us agree he is toast, but I'm sure Dodger brass wants to give him another shot. I don't understand why here, they should be watching him pitch at AAA as far as I'm concern.

Re: 7/31-8/2: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Atlanta Braves
I agree. They should have seen enough of Schmidt between minors/majors. Elbert could make the start tonight. Stults is pitching well in Albuquerque and could be the fifth starter. If Schmidt falters early I see Elbert coming in. It could be a huge opporntunity for him.
I think Colletti might be looking to a wavier wire deal to add a fifth starter. Those deals can get hard to do when you are in first place.
The Dodgers have gotten quality starts in 7 of their last 9 games. Two each by Kuroda, Wolf and Kershaw and one from Billingsley. Schmidt and Bills failed to do so their last starts. Still, pitching during this slump (lost 5 of the last 7) has not been the problem. We are losing because the team is leaving way to many runners in scoring position.
I see Torre has put Ethier back in the two spot to try to shake him from his slump. He is 2 for 16 on the road trip. Kemp moves up in the lineup with Martin and Hudson below him for a change.
Make no mistake, this is a tough series. Hanson has proved to be a good starter and we get Lowe and Jurrjens after that. Jurrjens has been pitching really well of late.

RE: 7/31-8/2: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Atlanta Braves
the Braves have a very nice rotation and their bullpen is solid at the end with Soriano and Gonzalez. Their only weakness is their lack of power and without LaRoche today, this might be the Dodgers best chance to steal a win in the series. However getting some runs off of Hanson is going to be tough.

In regards to the recent struggles in the offense.
"Steve lyons you gotta stop teaching them how to hit" - Colletti
haha.

Collins/Lyons interviewed Colletti on the game telecast. Colletti said we had offered 7 prospects for Halladay but couldn't get a deal. He says he was "pretty hot" at the 1 pm deadline when the deal for another pitcher (I assume this was Heath Bell) fell through at the very end.

Martin has this tendency to have a hot bat for like 2 straight games and then go cold for another 10.

Good to know that is was not for a lack of effort. I wonder if any good player left could pass waivers and still get traded?
By the way, what is Schimdt hitting on the gun for anyone watching?

I've seen him max out at 88, while hitting 87 a few times.

Glad to see a new line up tonight, still wish Kemp was in the 2 hole and Ethier in clean up. I like that O-Dog is in the 8 hole.

Re: 7/31-8/2: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Atlanta Braves
For all the Schmidt doom and gloom talk he has been good again tonight, his control is excellent today, he has thrown a few to many balls but has not missed in the middle of the plate, he has hit the edges all night much like his first start, his curveball has been really good tonight like his first start also, in his second start he couldn't control the curveball and it made a devastating difference he couldn't keep anybody off balance so they could sit on the 86-88 mph fastball that was not even spotting on the edge.
If he can keep this type of control he can be a very effective 6th starter for the rest of the year...

Re: 7/31-8/2: Los Angeles Dodgers @ Atlanta Braves
Another interesting point tonight is about Hansen, there was a lot of talk earlier in the season about him being a better prospect than Kershaw, I don't see it at all, not only is he almost 2 years older he doesn't throw as hard and is righthander which is not nearly as valuable as a great lefthander. Hansen has nice stuff but I don't see the kind of devastating stuff Kershaw has, I like the kid but in Kershaw's class I don't think so...

Jason Schmit: 6 innings of 1-hit ball.
What happened to that automatic loss?

Happy for the guy but lets see if we are even talking Shmidt at seasons end unless it's a DFA conversation. Hope he proves me wrong but I'm NOT GETTING GIDDY over one start!
