Welcome back, baseball!

The opening day matchup of Cain versus Kershaw is as good as it gets: 2 of the NL's best face off on Monday afternoon at Dodger Stadium. It's the defending champs versus their up-and-coming rivals. It's the dirty gray versus the clean white uniforms.

And, it figures to be a tough-scoring affair. On LA's side, Clayton Kershaw returns to make his 3rd straight opening day start. His 2012 campaign was more than solid, once again, with excellent numbers and dominant peripherals, resulting in a 2nd place Cy Young finish despite a season marred by a bad hip and achilles. Now healthy, LA would love to get the same production from their young ace. We know the 3 A+ pitches in his repertoire. We know how dominant he is against the Giants (see the numbers above). But we'd certainly like to see that again come Monday afternoon.

On offense, LA faces the ever-improving Matt Cain. Cain finished 6th in the NL CY voting in 2012, while throwing a perfect game and anchoring a stout Giants' staff. What is scarier is that Cain's peripherals have gotten more dominant every season, and with the fall of Lincecum from the elite, Cain has simply switched and taken over. With 4 very good pitches, Cain relies on a strategy that focuses on fastball location early and breaking pitches late. With a left-heavy lineup against him (that has seen success from time-to-time), LA figures to hope to score early and get out ahead on Cain before he can establish that breaking ball. When Cain is on his game, he could shut out any lineup in baseball.

GO BLUE!!!

Always a good day when opening day rolls around. Should be an action packed season starting off with an action packed opening series. Greinke gets a taste of this intense rivalry before having to actually pitch in it later in the season which might be good for him given his past.

In this series i am going to be focusing on how productive crawford can be out of the leadoff spot setting the table for the muscle in our lineup. Pretty optimistic that he can return to his pre boston form with positive attitude and teammates willing to challenge him and keep him focused.

Also gonna keep an eye on kemp and see how far behind he might be..i'm not too worried about him though.

Why would Crawford attempt to steal third there?

Since the first inning the Dodgers have gotten themselves out on the first pitch 6 times. That's hard to do. Games only 2/3 of the way through.

What a great opening day!

The opening ceremony was great with the pitching change to Sandy Koufax...

Kershaw did Koufax one better with the complete game shutout and the unbelievable bomb to get the Dodgers on the board in the 8th...

You have heard of the Six Million Dollar Man, but Kershaw is truly the 200 Million Dollar Man!

Great way to start the season

Wow could Kershaw have had a better start?   Wow just wow!

Hopefully Mattingly puts him in the line-up tomorrow - let him play first and hit clean-up.    Also great to see Crawford being a big time contributor even with his bone head base running mistake in the first.   He looks good with the bat in his hands.

Allows only 4 hits!  Complete game shutout!  Hits a dinger!  Great opening day.  And, Crawford looked good too as the leadoff man.  got on base on a couple of hits and was running the bases, even if he did get thrown out at third.  You can't steal it if you don't attempt it.  We'd be praising him if he had been called safe so you live with the wrong side of the odds on those plays.

I'm at the game tomorrow with my nephew with Ryu on the bump.  Can hardly wait!  This is my favorite time of the year.

I watched the end of the game during lunch.  Kershaw looked awesome!  Lets hope Ryu and Beckett are at their best.  Hopefully Greinke is ready to go though I don't expect a long outing from him.

I think this is a good indicator that spring stats shouldn't be taken seriously. That was utterly dominant.

RE: OPENING DAY 4/1-4/3: San Francisco Giants @ Los Angeles Dodg

What an outstanding performance by Kid K. That will be nominated for an espy and more importantly should get the rest of the team juiced up to play. The chemistry looks to be really strong so far.

Crawford did his job and got things started a couple times, upset that he tried to steal third on a 2-0 count without having a huge jump. 2-0 is generally going to be a fastball middle to outer part of the plate and with agon being lefty it makes for an easy out. I don't mind the aggressiveness though, in fact i prefer it. Well-timed aggression.

Kemp had a really nice at-bat in the first inning. Looks to be a little behind on the fastball right now but i think he will settle in. Until he can catch up i think he will focus on driving the ball to rf
