Ibanez signed, Colon Up; Maxwell and Ciriaco DFA

Welcome back Raul! The #Royals have signed Raul Ibanez to a Major League contract.

KC has also recalled infielder Christian Colon, who is in the Majors for the first time.

Justin Maxwell and Pedro Ciriaco have been designated for assignment. Ibanez will wear #18 and be in uniform tonight at Minnesota.

If there is any gas left in Ibanez's tank it could be ok and he brings power to the bench, and if Colon has any tank to go with all his gas then he could be worth something. If Maxwell and Ciriaco clear wavers they will help Omaha in their chase for the AAA crown, but if either gets claimed its no big loss.

I like it, Ibanez and Colon can't do any worse than those two. Why not.

Ibanez is puzzling. Colon makes sense.

It was time to move on from Maxwell. Needed to do something about RF, not sure this was it. I guess give Ibanez a shot before the trade deadline? ML minimum contract.

Initial reaction.....

Ibanez strengthens bench but also is designed as a shot across the bow for both Hosmer and Butler.

As for Colon, I guess this is just proof they don't see him as an everyday player? Or maybe he's going to get some regular reps at 3B?

Wow, a decidedly un-Royals move. Unfortunately, we may be a year late on Ibanez. His bat looked finished in LA. Wonder if he's strictly a bench bat or if they'll give him some starts in RF or 1B. A precursor to a Butler move?? Probably not....betting just an experienced bench bat. Hope it works better than Carlos Pena.

Re: Ibanez signed, Colon Up; Maxwell and Ciriaco DFA

my guess is they're trying to bring in ibanez now so they have enough time to see if he has anything left before maybe looking for someone else at the trade deadline if ibanez doesn't pan out. but either way:

ibanez>maxwell
colon>ciriaco

I like this. Ibanez and Colon are both improvements over Maxwell and Ciriaco, and if Raul really is out of gas, then we just DFA him right after the break and pay next-to-nothing.

only problem is they basically don't have a 4th OF right now. I don't mind playing Dyson everyday right now but hope there are no injuries. would have rather seen Merrifield called up instead of Colon since he's more versitile.

Re: Ibanez signed, Colon Up; Maxwell and Ciriaco DFA

Guess I don't understand the Ibanez move......age obviously being the biggest issue, but, beyond that....he's another LH batter......

You know he won't see anytime in the OF......so that leaves DH time and I guess potential 1B duty....however, he's put up a worse OPS (.523) than almost anyone already on the Royals team.....and FAR worse than Butler.

He's useless at this point against lefties (1 hit in 33 PA's this season).

Can we afford to just carry him (devoting a roster spot on the 25 man) as a pinch hitter against RH pitchers??

Aoki is a week or so from coming back; it'll be interesting to see who goes when he's activated.

If Ibanez plays OF this is a terrible idea. If Ibanez plays 1B and Hoz gets demoted or benched for a week to clear his head, then I like it. My guess is we're gonna do the former.

I still think colon could turn into an infante/placido polanco type player. his numbers don't jump out at you but he's always had very good strike zone control which for me is the biggest indicator in determining mlb success jumping from the minors

Andy McCullough ‏@McCulloughStar 45s
Dayton Moore stopped short of referring to Raul Ibanez as a bench player. He believes Ibanez can help in RF, LF and, yes, at first base.

Signing Ibanez to a ML deal basically means somebody has to go in a week.  Is there a trade in the works, DFA Aoki, demote Hosmer, demote Moose and make Valencia the full time third baseman.  They're not going to sign Ibanez to a ML deal and release him 10 days later.

Re: Ibanez signed, Colon Up; Maxwell and Ciriaco DFA

Colon has really turned into the player they thought they drafted with one enormous exception.  The pop he showed in college did not translate to wood bats.  And it really crippled his chances to be anything impactful.

He can still hit for a pretty good average, control the zone a bit, play a passable short and a pretty good second.  He was also supposed to have the intangibles to make his average tools play up.  We shall see.

Still would love to have Chris Sale.
