David Lough traded

The Orioles have acquired OF David Lough from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for INF Danny Valencia

Does this spell the end of Bonifacio? Does Valencia have any options left?

Interesting move. The more I look at it the more I like it.

Makes me think the organization hasn't seen much of a change from Moose since the end of last season.

Time for Moose-watch to begin. The guy will take his spot if he's not ready to go next year.

Moose insurance. Should also solidify Maxwell's spot on the roster.

Valencia was really good in a small sample size last year but overall has been pretty meh. Don't see him as much of a different player than Lough, just at a position in which we need some depth.

Seem to remember him hitting well against the Royals when he was a Twin. Including a slam against Greinke.

I don't get it, unless they are working on trading Moose.  Valencia is out of options, and he is limited to 3B.

So is Moose the one optioned if he doesn't burn the house down in ST and Valencia starts at 3rd?

I don't know if that's the end of Bonifacio...can Valencia play anywhere other than third?

Re: David Lough traded

Interesting. Valencia has a career .880 OPS against LHP, making him a nice platoon partner with Moose if he doesn't dramatically improve this season.

That said, he is out of options and doesn't appear to play another position, so would we really keep two 3B-only players on the roster?

Some here want us to go with 2 backup OFers,
because dyson is too good to let go. Now, we
have the option of colon starting in aaa and
Valencia in KC. With maxwell as the only OFer.
Boni in a utility role.

RE: David Lough traded

There are two ways of looking at this.  First, it looks like Maxwell is preferred to Lough by this organization.  If we were not going to keep Lough on the ML roster we might as well trade him for something.  This could a message to Moose that you are not the only option so you better shape up.  If Moose does play well in Spring Training we can always designate Valencia for assignment and if we lose him no big deal.  We probably would have lost Lough for nothing anyway.

Second, the organization has seen Moose's performance in Venezuela and they are making plans to move on.  Valencia could be a decent placeholder for Dozier.  I'm sure we could move Moose for a B level prospect in the low minors.  There are teams out there who will take a shot at him.

This move makes complete since on a number of levels. Pushes Moose to perform, gives us viable replacement if he doesn't or a platoon partner if needed. Also relieves the logjam of OF'ers we had. Also allows us to keep balanced bench. I like it,

So barring injury, this means one of Dyson, Maxwell, Valencia, or Moose is not making the 25 man roster, right? No way we're carrying 14 position players.

Does Moose have any options left?  I would expect we still have some flexibility with sending him to Omaha.

RE: David Lough traded

Does this possibly mean a Butler trade in the works?  He could play third some and then DH as well.

Moose has options, Valencia, Dyson and Maxwell do not.
Assuming Moose continues his poor hitting in Spring Training I could see him starting the year at Omaha.  Roster problem is solved.

RE: David Lough traded

With the questions concerning moose, Valencia
makes more sense than dyson. I would assume
Valencia would play a better 1b than butler, as
well.

Re: David Lough traded

If they are serious about the "flexibility" issue, it could mean that they will platoon Maxwell and Valencia at DH and trade Billy for a starting pitcher.
