Mendoza likely traded before breaking camp.  Joseph starts season in Omaha.  Otherwise I agree.

RE: Opening Day 25 Man Roster

I'm not sure Joseph is quite ready and Bueno seemed good vs. LHB's in a small sample size in 2012. There are some other things I'd like to see, but that is about the only change I'd make. I still think it is crazy that they think they can carry Mendoza, Hochevar and Chen while screwing over Coleman. This seems like an easy solution...cut Hochevar and keep Coleman on the 25-man.

But I'm only a fan, so what do I know?

projecting the roster a week in to camp is pretty ridiculous. There will be injuries, guys have good and bad springs, possible trades, etc

RE: Opening Day 25 Man Roster

Joseph is probably the only question - otherwise, I concur.

Hochevar will be the #5 and get yanked after he has made it thorugh the line-up one time and more than 1 guy gets on base.  Mendoza and Chen will be long relief cleaning up his puke.

Kottaras backing up Sal
Miggy backing up Moose and DHing when Hosmer gets a day off and Butler has to cover 1st
EJ is the super sub and covering for Escobar, Getz, Gordon, and Frenchy
Dyson is the speed off the bench and spelling Cain.

When it comes down to final spots in the bullpen or bench, always remember options.  I don't think Joseph makes team out of ST because he has options.  I don't think Bueno does but I might be mistaken.

RE: Opening Day 25 Man Roster

The final bullpen spot (barring an injury or trade) will be between Bueno, Mescoso, Gutierrez, and Coleman.  I don't think Joseph is even in the conversation.  My money would be on either Gutierrez or Bueno.  Coleman has options, Mescoso is more of a backend long reliever which Chendozaver will have covered.  Bueno has options, but if Yost wants a loogy he is currently the most viable candidate.  Otherwise I think they stick with Gutierrez whose arm they seem to really like and is out of options.

Dan Wheeler might be a darkhorse candidate, too.

I'm sort of with Ryan in thinking one of Blowchaver, Chen, or Dozer gets trade. I can't see them keeping all three and once a team that is thin on starters has an injury KC will dump someone on them for a very minimal return. KC seems to have plenty of other 5th starter types, so I can see it happening. Probably just wishful thinking on my part.

James Shields the team's Opening Day starter

Royals manager Ned Yost has named James Shields the team's Opening Day starter.

"That's a no-brainier," Yost said. The Royals' big offseason acquisition, Shields has posted a 3.15 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over the last two seasons while topping 220 strikeouts in each campaign. He'll face the White Sox in Chicago on Opening Day.

Luis Mendoza and his groundball inducing, newly developed slider, cheap cost and 4 years of team control makes a lot of sense for the Rockies who are looking for starters.  They have a lot of intriguing young outfielders in Tim Wheeler, Corey Dickerson, Rafael Ortega, Charlie Blackmon and Kyle Parker.  I think Glass would prefer to dump one of Chen or Hochevar's salaries, though.

Living in Colorado, Hochevar is still a fan favorite from his time as a high schooler in southern Colorado.  Luke's hometown is a little place called Fowler which is about 1500 (maybe).  Anyways, KC isn't going to keep Mendoza, and either Chen or Hoch in the bullpen.  Starting pitching is too value and KC is too thrifty to put a $4.5 million guy in the LR role.  Hochevar has the stuff to pitch in Coors and is use to getting hammered in 2 of 3 starts so the "Guthrie effect" shouldn't faze him.

Love Charlie Blackmon as a guy who would be a good bench/platoon player in RF.  Has some speed and good hitter in minors.  Think Parker or Wheeler is too high price on CO. side for one of our spare starting pitchers.

I can't believe I just typed KC has spare starting pitchers.  That might be a firstwink

Wait till next spring... We lose Santana, Chen, and maybe Hoch

in trouble right? not so much

You have
Shields
Guthrie
Davis
Paulino
Duffy

Then you have
Ventura
Zimmer
Lamb
probably ready next year at various points. Now clearly things will happen they always do, but our pitching situation is looking much better going forward than it did
