Mark Appel not in the list. Some hand wringing over not picking him last year.

?? Appel isn't eligible for the list like every other returning college and high school player.

--------------------------------------------- He isn't on the list because he doesn't play for a MLB farm club. He still plays for Stanford.

Re: 2013 BA Top 100
I will be intrigued to see Appel's fate in the June draft. He's a senior and has top 5 talent. Represented by Boras (enough said). Would a team pick him high and give him a take it or leave offer below slot money because he is a senior. Could a guy like Appel go indy ala Luke, Crow or JD Drew after giving up another professional year by going back to Stanford. Here's hoping he doesn't drop to Royals spot.
Starling's tools and potential are exceptional. His first season was good - 3rd ranked Appy League prospect. I think people get a little worked up about KC holding him in Ex ST. last year after he signed late year before. He's a kid who is raw and needs lots of reps and instruction. Better to hold him back and have him be successful than push him forward and fail miserably.
Zimmer is a guy I have lots of confidence. He has the look of an ace! Fairly fresh arm since he didn't pitch a ton coming up in baseball.
Ventura will be in KC by end of summer. Either in the pen for the stretch run in September or as a look see if out of contention.
Next years top 100 - Mondesi and Lamb are in.

That's actually a low ranking for Starling, isn't it?
Most rankings I've seen him have higher than that.

Re: 2013 BA Top 100
Law has him at #45, and Mayo has him at #26, so not really. Anywhere in the 20-50 range seems about right.

Re: 2013 BA Top 100
Even though Donald Eldridge is a dolt, he's right about Appel being Hochevar and it's all about what's between the ears. Hoch is not a competitor. Appel is not a competitor. At some point, when everybody has this immense talent, it becomes about more than just the tools and while Appel and Hochevar both have fantastic arms, they don't have the "want" to get it done. I know that term is made fun of by some stat guys, but the fact is that it's a tool that is and should be taken into consideration.

Re: 2013 BA Top 100
My two cents on the list:
1. I'd have Dylan over Profar 2. Shelby Miller is ranked too high in my opinion, I'd place him in that 15-20 range where they have Walker placed, who I would have in the top 10. 3. Bubba is ranked awfully high, and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the highest he's ever ranked. There are enormous concerns that he's displaying at a low level that will be exploited in 2013. 4. I don't think Didi G. makes this list if he isn't the main piece in the Bauer deal. 5. Lucas Giolito will be a top 20 on the list in 2014. 6. Roman Quinn barely makes the list, next year he's a top 40. 7. I like Byron Buxton, but he's not a top 10 player right now. Zunino, however, is.
I love these lists because of the conversation that it creates.

You have to keep in mind that starling was a 20 yr old playing in short season which is almost unheard of, many people just don't believe in his swing and think its going to he exposed pretty quickly in the higher levels

Another topic of note - Mondesi & Bonifacio were close to the back end of the 100.

Re: 2013 BA Top 100
i disagree with this statement. it is clear that hoch has not got it done, no doubt about it, but it is not because he is not a competitor. if anything it is the opposite. he tries to hard and overthrows when he gets into a jam. i know the family and they are some of the most competitive people around. whatever is wrong with hoch, it is not the "want" to get it done. Re: 2013 BA Top 100
Starling is going to be a complete stud in all likelihood......he might bust if his tools deteriorate, or he doesn't work hard enough, but his talent and apparent makeup will probably erase all the skill deficiencies you mention. His swing can be fixed as an example. Just takes a guy willing to listen and enough reps to rebuild the muscle memory. I watched him play in burlington last year, The inherent hand strength, speed, arm strength and hand eye coordination cannot be taught, and fortunately he has all of these in spades....
It's also important to understand he probably tripled the number of games he played in his life last year, this year he will double that up again. This is the first time he has used a wooden bat. I could care less if his swing gets exposed et al unless he doesn't adjust, now if his bat speed starts slowing, or he refuses coaching then those are red flags....
