I think Paulino.  I expect Hochevar to get 8 or 9 starts before they move Chen or Smith into the rotation in May/June because Luke will pitch like he always has.  Their belief that Mendoza is more suited to middle relief will likely keep him from getting the starts he probably deserves. Paulino should join the major league staff in June or July and take over the 5th spot for the remainder of the season.

I don't think Paulino will be back until July at the earliest. And I am not sure how effective he'll be...hopefully he'll be ready to rock and roll.

Not Hochevar hopefully.  Duffy or Paulino would be fine.

Just don't think Duffy or Paulino will be ready by August although I would love to be wrong.

Think Chen and Hochevar are gone by August.  One of them is gone by end of ST.

Here goes my pre Spring Training prediction: KC will trade for a starting pitcher like Ricky Nolasco because they are in the thick of the pennant race.  Maybe a guy like Bud Norris.  If KC has decided to go for it and they are in the hunt this season, the reasonable thing to do is to go for it while they are in the race.

again. i agree with wilson, but i think without the pressure of being "the man" and having a shorter leash, hoch will finally earn himself a apot in the rotation.

i know. i know. dream world.

I'll say Paulino. Duffy goes to AAA and comes up in September, when he hopefully is pitching for KC in the wild card chase. If both guys look good in rehab starts, it is going to be like making a couple really nice trades at the deadline.

Another thing is that KC may want a longer look at Paulino, as he will be in Arb-4 in 2014. Depending on other prospects, they may not need him at that point.

Recovery times from TJ surgery are now much shorter; realistic recovery times are now 9-12 months rather than the old 12-18 months.  Lewis Yocum's rehab recovery is a 10 month program.  That would put Paulino in the majors in May.  If a player is rehabbing well, they should be throwing at the 6 month mark.  Paulino's surgery was at the end of June and he was throwing a baseball by the end of November.  That puts him a month ahead of schedule, which would seem to indicate that Paulino is working very hard and taking the rehab seriously.  So I believe Paulino will be back in June and could be even better than he was before.  That would be a huge bonus for the Royals.

Re: Royals Rotation, who will be #5 in August?

My money is on Mendoza. I think if the TJ recipients are back, they will be in long relief or at Omaha. One of the things I have heard from Tommy John surgery folks is that velocity comes back quickly, command comes back more slowly. Duffy, in his short Royals career, has had control problems, so I think plugging him into the rotation is doubtful.

As far as Luke Hochevar, I think the Royals look at this spring as a showcase. I do not anticipate him being on the 25 man roster at the start of the year. If he has a good spring, I think the Royals will trade him to somebody (San Diego, maybe) and cut their losses. Don't be misled by all the comments about Luke turning it around. You have to say that if you are the Royals. And if he has a lousy spring, I think they take the hit and get rid of him.

You can pretty much put your money on one of Guthrie, Davis or Santana flopping so they will prob need 2(if not three) SPs by August. I think Santana is going to be very disappointing but Wade Davis isn't a sure thing either.

You could make a sound argument that there could be a completely new 3-5 come August.

So....not much confidence in Wade Davis as a starter from you guys?

It's not like he hasn't had success as a #4 starter in the not too distant past.

I think you could as well, and I think it's probably going to be better than what we have now. This is the biggest reason I think Moore did what he did. A lot of people ripped him for his "win now" trade when even after the trade we didn't have a 90 win team. But if Paulino is doing anything close to what he was doing when he went down, and Duffy comes back the same, we start to approach a 90 win team. The problem will be if we are too buried by the time they are ready to come back. They will be the July pitching acquisitions this year....hopefully in jun and hopefully effective....

Interesting injury report on Fangraphs.  Check out the estimate on Duffy and Paulino .  Maybe they will be ready to go?

I think 3 years from now people will be a lot less angry about the trade than today....because of Davis....

You know who's in mid-season form?  Dutton, that's who.
