June Draft
I hate to look so far ahead, but I sincerely hope that the Kansas City Royals seriously consider drafter RHP Ryne Stanek out of Arkansas with their draft pick. I saw the kid pitch several times last year and I kinda think he could turn out to be something special. Just saying, LOL!

Re: June Draft
There's no way he will be around at the 8th pick, which is where the Royals draft. They really need to look college OF in this draft. They need to find someone they can plug into RF more than anything.

Most early mocks have him going in the top 5 though.

Re: June Draft
Seeing more the scouting reports on college and HS players, Stanek is in the top tier of college guys. Strength of draft is college pitching and HS OF along with prep catchers. Since KC drafts 8th this year, I would guess the top guys like Stanek would be off the board. Never know - who would have thought Appel would have dropped to the Pirates. Stanek is a KC area kid too which would be great for the Royals. There are always a few players that move up the ranks into the top 5 especially from HS.
I hope KC goes for best available player regardless of position. Need at big league level and talent available when you pick don't always line up well especially the lower down you go. Talent is the name of the game. The Royals should do well with competitive lottery pick and second round pick coming close together. They'll have 3 of top 40 picks.

Re: June Draft
Yeah, but that was a pretty rare scenario and he didn't even sign. I really like Austin Wilson, the OF from Stanford. We absolutely need to start filling the cupboard again on the offensive side of the ball. If the rotation falters, we have Duffy, Paulino, Zimmer, Ventura ready to step in. If the offense falters or if someone gets hurt, we have nothing. MHBDemon wrote:

I'm fascinated by Manea after what he did in the Cape: 51 ip, 86 k, 7 bb, 21 h

Re: June Draft
If you want to replace Myers with a close to MLB bat the 2 best are Kris Bryant (his situation Is eerily similar to Colby Rasmus however) and Aaron Judge
2 power bats who have a ton of power...Judge would be a RF and Bryant more of a 1B
Moran is a maybe and Austin Wilson scares me....although I like his teammate Ragira if he falls to 2nd round
HS bat wise I am sold on Yukon, OK C Jon Denney (Meadows will be gone by our pick)
Manaea is my favorite collee arm but he will be gone (as will Stanek and Appel)
It will be interesting to see what Whitson does at Florida because I would bet he is a top 10 guy before long. I also like his Gator teammate Crawford.

Perez is great but catchers have a habit of wearing out quicker than other position players due to the daily up and down grind and Denny looks like he could be a piece of the solution.

The Royals generally look for offense in the first, so if its there I suspect thats the way they will go

Take the best player, whether he's college or HS regardless of position. You can plug RF with a serviceable guy after this year.

Re: June Draft
The baseball draft is some much different from drafts in other sports like NFL or NBA. First round pick goes right into starting lineup. Baseball just doesn't work like that - NO Andrew Luck or RG3 to plug into the lineup. Even college guys take 1 or 1 1/2 years (usually).
Accumulating talent is the name of the game for the draft and signing players in Latin America. Best player philosophy should always win out in baseball. Royals should have good shot at second level college or top prep position player.

Appel was Boras' guinea pig. He was the consensus number 1 player last year, and they were making outrageous demands for salary to see whether new teams would bite despite the penalties under the new CBA. Teams did not bite, and Appel lost all his leverage and is now going to be on the powerless side of the negotiation process come the June draft. As for Stanek, I like him, but he is an ultra max effort guy. This is exactly the type of player the Royals have had trouble with in the past. I'm on board taking pitchers with light work loads that ooze talent, and put the finishing touches on them during their few years in the minors. They're also going to need to be safe and draft the first baseman of the future because Hosmer will not be giving the Royals any sort of home town discount--though Moose might. Lots of holes to fill suddenly, hopefully they can have a couple terrific drafts and restock the farm system.

Re: June Draft
Yeah, I have no idea what Appel was thinking. With the new caps on amateur spending, no one is going to be able to offer him that super large bonus that he wants. Those are a thing of the past. --------------------------------------------- --- JoeMadre wrote: MHBDemon wrote: wilson123 wrote: There's no way he will be around at the 8th pick, which is where the Royals draft. Re: June Draft
In fact, almost can draft him and offer him UNDER slot value because of his "risk" value. (Hochevar, crow switched to bullpen instead of starter, etc) What is he going to do...sit out again??!!??!! --------------------------------------------- --- wilson123 wrote: Yeah, I have no idea what Appel was thinking.
