Johnny Giovatella

Johnny Giovatella

Has he ever played OF in the minors?  Since we have a dearth of corner OF that can hit, and we are betting Getz gets the 2B job, is this a possibility?  I doubt sending him back down to the minors is going to be a benefit, but he needs to find AB's

He hasn't, and while it might be a rousing success, my guess is that it wouldn't go very well. Just a hunch.

So far, he really hasn't shown he can hit any better than Franceour. My hope is that he will have a successfull ST, and be our regular 2B.

RE: Johnny Giovatella

I have always thought they should give him some time in LF, if only to increase roster flexibility. It is hard to carve out a spot if you can ONLY play 2B. Being able to play LF would allow him to get some ABs on a day off for Gordon, increases flexibility in late game substitutions, and provides further injury insurance. He's a good enough athlete, just need to know if he can learn the nuances.

Of course, the best thing would have been to give him 400 ABs at 2B last year, without having to look over his shoulder to see if he can really hit. All the flexibility in the world won't matter if he can't hit, which I still contend we don't have any idea about.

I've been among those who think he hasn't really been given enough of a chance at 2B, but I worry that his legs just aren't long enough to cover enough ground in the outfield.

The second part of this post sums up my feelings perfectly. There was no reason at all to not play him in 2012. We spent most of the year basically jerking off with guys who either had no future at the position (yuni, getz) or giving PA's to Falu or Abreau who are at best utility guys. Now, he's still just a major question mark with the bat. But had we played him, we would KNOW if the guy could hit.

Waste of time and opportunity.

So far we know Gio is not that great with the glove...and hasn't shown he can hit in the majors. He'll be lucky to make the roster, IMO

And what is your qualification to make such a statement? Have you watched a 1000 games? Have you any scouting background? Or is this an anal extraction?

And then go out and sign Tejada (which I don't mind, but still I thought the idea of giving Falu and Abreau the at bats was to see if they could be our utility guy for the next few years, I understand niether is very good at short, but still...)
It's not real, it's internet.

RE: Johnny Giovatella

Small sample size of big league at bats says he sucks. A much larger sample size of minor league at bats says he should be a decent major league hitter. I always side with the bigger sample size. But Gia's problem is that he might be a -10 run guy with a glove on, which makes him useless.

RE: Johnny Giovatella

Yuni had good minor league numbers too..Actually tons of players for Northwest Arkansas and Omaha do...1) Its the minor leagues  2) Extreme hitters parks

That is why I'm not going to crown Wil Myers either
