Lefties Needed

We have Chen and Collins and Teaford as our lefties. No true loogies.  Chen and Collins not a big advantage against lefties.  Will Smith is tough against lefties. Would they carry him as a reliever?  Seems like we really need a killer lefty.  Sherrill is nice but who knows.  Maybe we should sign a JP Howell to get out that crucial left handed bat late. Sooner or later it will be important for us to have that edge.

RE: Lefties Needed

This is one of the reasons (of many) that I wanted Matt Moore) from Tampa Bay - a strong left handed starter - but if Duffy comes back and can pitch in July, August or September (no promises on that), he may be the occasional fifth starter for the Royals down the stretch.

George Sherrill is older and coming off arm woes. He had some good years with Seattle as a situational lefty, and actually made an All-Star team when he was the Orioles closer one year. FWIW, he wears the brim of his hat slightly pointed up, and his nickname with the O's was "The Brim Reaper." If he can come back to his previous performance, either as closer or LOOGIE, he'll help.

Another guy I hated when he came to Baltimore who was better than expected (to me) and is still out there, looking for a deal, is Matt Lindstrom. Righty comes in throwing gas, then uses a slider as his out pitch. If the Royals have any thoughts of giving Crow a shot as a starter, Lindstrom could take Crow's place in the bullpen, and with the same hard stuff....

Re: Lefties Needed

I expect Joseph to be one of the guys like Coleman and Adcock were last year that is shipped back and forth constantly between Omaha and KC in order to keep fresh arms out there. As far as the 5th spot in the rotation I think the lack of a LHP is why the organization is hoping Smith has a good spring so they can put him there (an idea I am in favor of as well) in order to put a different look in the rotation. I think the staff will set up:
Starters:
1-Shields
2- Santana
3- Guthrie
4- Davis
5- Smith

Pen:
CL- Holland
RHP- Crow
RHP- Herrera
RHP-Hochever
RHP- Mendoza
LHP- Chen
LHP- Collins

I dont think they will carry more than 12 pitchers given how many innings they are going to expect out of the starters this year. I exect them to find any and every excuse to find room for Coleman and Joseph to get opportunities to pitch up here as well.

I just don't see both Chen and Hoch in the pen. One will be in the rotation or one will be gone.  Smith will probably start the season in AAA.

Lefties on the 40 man, or who have seen previous ML action:

Collins
Teaford
Bueno
Chen
Smith
Joseph
Sherril
Severino
Verdugo

Plus, these starting prospects that could be available in the pen this year:
Marks
Dwyer
Lamb
Aruguelles (perhaps just make him a RP to get SOME value out of him?)

We are fine on LHRP. Now, if someone could find a Right Feilder, that would be a plus.

Re: Lefties Needed

Smith wil start in AAA, Hoch will be 5 starter, what about moscosco, the guy we just picked up from COL?

Ideally, Chen is traded and then Mendoza is your long relief guy as well

Bueno was good last year. But he's 31 and has little ML experience.

And since his name is Bueno, He's gotta be Good (at least in Spanish) ;)

I think we'd get more impact about of some quality bench depth and competition for the 2B or RF spots.

I also thought Bueno did ok in 2012. Collins, Teaford, Bueno - could see aloof in 2013 pen.. Joseph is wild card. Finally, is this the year moves Dwyer to pen and let him cut loose.

Even if they had a right fielder, that wouldn't be fair to Frenchy:(

Re: Lefties Needed

I see the Dodgers signed J.P. Howell for 2.5 per.  Last year with his 87mph fastball he whiffed 7.5 per 9 with a 2.00 ERA against lefties in 50 innings.  That's the loogie we could use against Fielder, etc.  Do not undersetimate the effectiveness of a good situational lefty.

Re: Lefties Needed

Bruce Chen will pitch for China in the World Baseball Classic.

Chen is of Chinese descent but was born in Panama and played for them during the 2009 WBC, pitching well enough to earn a deal with the Royals. The left-hander will compete for Kansas City's No. 5 starter job in 2013.

Re: Lefties Needed

Danny Duffy was on the radio the other week. When asked about the apparent glut of starters when he and Paulino return, he said he would absolutely be fired up to pitch out of the pen. Said he did it one fall (either instructs or AFL, can't remember which) and loved it.

Assuming the Royals already have 5 starters that are healthy and productive, AND they are in contention at midseason, I could see this being a great move.

Duffy would likely be dominant out of the pen and it might be a good way to ease him back into the fold after his injury.

Just a thought...

Between Collins, Bueno, Joseph, Teaford, Sherrill and maybe even Chris Dwyer KC is fine when it comes to LH relievers.

Re: Lefties Needed

I wouldn't have a problem with Duffy pitching out of the bullpen at first.  But, I think it's a big assumption that we'll have 5 healthy and productive starters even with our depth.  Nonetheless, if he does go to the bullpen, I hope it's only temporary because the Royals don't have many starters with his upside.
