Royals trying to dump Hoch
Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Royals called the Rockies to ask about their interest in Luke Hochevar, but "nothing has materialized." The Royals really should have just non-tendered Hochevar. He's set to earn more than $4 million in arbitration, which doesn't make him attractive as a trade chip. The right-hander is also probably on the outside looking in for a rotation spot in Kansas City following the acquisition of James Shields and Wade Davis.

Re: Royals trying to dump Hoch
I think everybody in America besides DM knew this. Now just gotta hope to break even in this deal somehow. Hope to break even? If we dump Hoch, it's a victory for us.

Crystal ball: Royals eventually face facts and dump Hoch. He is picked up by the Cardinals, and proceeds to pitch 200 innings with a 3.82 ERA. There is a 100% chance of this happening, so just accept it.

The Rockies have had known interest in Hoch in past years before as well.

Again, we all wonder why the hell he was tendered in the first place. Had they just DFA'd him, we could be trading Chen and looking at S Marcum right now. Instead DM has to sell some poor team on the worst pitcher in baseball for $4.4 million.

I assume they tendered because they knew at least a few teams would be interested. They can't possibly be dumb enough to tender hoch without a potential suitor in mind

I don't think he is the worst pitcher in baseball. He is only statistically because the Royals have been dumb enough to give him chance after chance. Time to let him go in either a trade or release.

Care to wager on that? The "dumb enough" part, I mean. I fully expect Hoch to be in the rotation in 2013. gilmeche55 wrote: I assume they tendered because they knew at least a few teams would be interested. They can't possibly be dumb enough to tender hoch without a potential suitor in mind

There is always a team that thinks they can either change his grip, arm slot, or move him over 2 inches on the rubber and voila, he's Pedro. We need one sucker to bite.

I think they'll eventually move him but they are going to have to eat half his salary and accept a lotto ticket a ball player as a return. Here's hoping to hit the jackpot. Lol. I think the team to offer him up to would be the Twins who are desperate for pitching. Would save a few million and assure us of a few wins next year.

Why would they eat half his contract only to receive a lotto ticket when they can just release him in ST and only have to pay 1/6th of his contract?

I think the Royals are terrified--TERRIFIED--that something like this happens. ryanluvstony wrote:

Re: Royals trying to dump Hoch
2 reasons... first is from my understanding of new cba they would end up in front of an arbitrater trying to justify that he was not worthy of a spot on 25 man roster (even if as a mop up man) and if the arbitrator doesn't agree with the R's they can award full salary to Hoch even if he doesn't pitch an inning. 2nd it sets a bad precedent and agents will use that to steer players away from the team. They will not want their guys to sign in a place where they can be cut after finding better options (Im talking about draft picks). ryanluvstony wrote:

I thought it was the Jeff Suppan effect? ryanluvstony wrote: ElChupanibre wrote: Crystal ball: Royals eventually face facts and dump Hoch. But at present, non-tendering sure seems like it would have been the slam-dunk way to go.
