Yeah no way you can have Gio in the organization unless he DHs at Omaha. Colon needs to play 2B there everyday and you can't carry 2 2B-only guys in Kansas City.

Don't worry guys, I'm sure that this is just insurance for Gio and that Johnny will be given every opportunity to have the job in spring.

RE: Getz and Royals agree to a new contract
I don't hate it in terms of the monetary amount. It's low enough that they could go into spring training with an open competition for 2B and could cut Getz and only be out 175-260K depending on when he was cut if he lost out or got hurt again. It's a reasonable cost for insurance. 500K over the minimum for one year isn't keeping the Royals from signing anyone. And as much as I complain about him, Getz does actually have a sliver of trade value at that salary especially if another team's 2B were to get hurt in ST (not much, mind you, but likely more than they just got for Mazzaro/C-Rob).
All that said, none of that matters, what does matter is Getz will be the starting 2B on opening day, and that sucks donkey balls.

It's the fact that Giavotella has earned an extended chance to my eyes, and isn't going to get one from the looks of things. This does not surprise me. I can't even say I'm really mad about it, because the writing has been on the wall ever since they signed Yuni last offseason and I'm just done complaining beyond this one post. I just consider it to be mis-management of the roster. Hopefully they trade Gio so he gets a chance to actually play somewhere else.

*walks into traffic* Because Johnny has done so much with his opportunities that he has gotten so far, even if Getz wasn't signed Gio would have to be looking over his shoulder for Falu and Abreu both of which did more with less of a chance than Johnny did.

Gio litterally couldn't have done less in the chance he got.

Re: Getz and Royals agree to a new contract
Why?
It's not that much money and is really pretty meaningless in the larger picture, but why?

Because Gio isn't the answer, any available $ is going to be spent on pitching, and Falu/Abreu are both ideally backups who have a lot of versatility. You hit Getz ninth in the order and probably non-tender him in a year and hand the job to Colon or go get a FA.
