effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
According to Jeff Passan of YahooSports.com, the Royals are "calling everyone" in an effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen. The Royals are trying to free up money before they attempt to trade for a starter. The problem is that neither Hochevar nor Chen are very tradeable commodities, as they're both set to make more than $4 million in 2013 and are coming off less than stellar seasons. What is pretty clear at this point is that the Royals are pretty dead set on adding another impact starter.

RE: effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
because Glass isnt going to spend more money than he did last year, so DM is trying to unload any semi big salary he has. Thats why your seeing rumors about Butler, and now Hoch and Chen. Hoch is just a formality if no one bites thell non tender him, but you get the point

Should just non-tender Hochevar if they can't trade him.
I can actually see him fairly decently in the NL.

I'm sure they can get a bag of balls for either as long as they aren't trying to fleece someone... may be easier if they'd wait until some of the other free agents signing

RE: effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
As pitching starved as Minnesota is, I could see us making our first ever trade with them.
I am surprised the Dodgers do not try to get him..they can afford to stick a 5 million a year pitcher in AAA.

Re: effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
Agreed. If someone will trade for Hochevar, then great. I think he might turn it around with a change of scene and a new pitching coach. In any event, he's not worth $4-5 million so he has absolutely no business being on the roster next year. I could actually see a team taking Bruce Chen. He was a 1.3 WAR starter last year, so he's not a terrible option at the back of the rotation. If you go with 1 WAR=$5 million, then his salary is not unreasonable.

Minnesota and San Diego could be a fit for one of them. Maybe Houston.

RE: effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
They could trade them kinda quick if you ask me..
Attach them to a prospect. Let the prospects minor league WAR dictate the value of who they take with them..Higher the WAR that player had on the farm, take Hoch and his contract. Lower WAR, you get Chen.
Then they can decide the financials after...while being thrilled with their shiny new prospect.

One of the Pirates writers John Perrotto said that before the small trade was made they were discussing Hochevar.
No idea if that is still in play though.

I'm confused (Of course, I'm a royals fan). Glass said they could increase payroll but we are trying to get rid of pitchers that make chump change so we can increase the payroll. Glass you are talking out of both sides of your mouth. Bottom line is we still have to trade someone good to get a pitcher.

I think you could probably get someone to take Chen. He was a little rough last year, but hes been slightly above avg in 2010-2011. His salary isnt huge. I think there is a market there. not going to get much, but id be surprised if they couldnt trade him off to someone

Hoch and Chen are fixed costs. You get rid of them you have more to work with(I don't know if that it is the intention, but it could be if Glass is willing to spend).

Some deal must be on the table that they're ready to pull the trigger on, once they dump Chen. As has been already pointed out, they're trying to get something for Hochevar and if there are no bites, they'll just just part ways with him (and his arb salary). Since they're wanting to part company with both of them, does this mean we're trying to acquire TWO starters.....possibly one via trade and one via free agency???

RE: effort to trade Luke Hochevar and/or Bruce Chen.
I don't have a problem keeping Chen if he's our #5 starter. In a pinch, he could be a #4. But, it's not Bruce's fault that he's ran out there against a bunch of #1's and #2's. I'm inclined to think that he's the kind of guy that would pitch better with a lead, instead of always walking on eggshells out there. Note: I have data to back that up and might easily be proven wrong.
Hoch should be gone. 'Nuff said.
HOWEVER, I'd go to Zach with an open checkbook and crocodile tears in my eyes.
1: Greinke 2: Guthrie 3: Santana 4: Mendoza 5: Odorizzi
I think we can definitely compete with that rotation, even tho it's all righties. When Duffy and Paulino come back, unless they're pitching light's out, I'd send Dozer and Odorizzi to the pen. Or use Danny and Felipe in the pen for a little while to ease them back in slowly. At that point, we'd have a surplus of quality starters (indulge my fantasy).
Again, Hoch = gone.
Chen = our #5, if we can't get that elusive extra arm or at least look at using him the pen. I honestly think Bruce would be a valuable piece in the late innings. He's probably worth more to us than to most other teams.
But, sigh, a warm body with a left arm never seems to retire. They just fade away.
