FA SIGNING: Marion commits to CLE

The Clippers the latest team showing interest in free agent forward Shawn Marion, a source said. Cavs, Pacers, Heat also still interested.

RC: "We've seen Parsons be a very effective defensive player."
Cuban: "I talk to NBA scorers and ask, ‘Who defended you the best? Who’s the top three?’ And Parsons was on a couple lists."

Clippers probably the best spot for him. Play for a contender and probably start over Barnes.

MASSIVE floor spacing issues with Jordan, Griffin, and Marion on the court at the same time. Yikes.

Floor spacing is not all there is in basketball. Expand your mind past that thinking.

Floor spacing is like half of basketball. It's so important (offensively speaking) that it might as well be everything.
A Jordan/Griffin/Marion offense would have gigantic problems.

That being said, I still hope he doesn't go there. The Clips are already a pretty damn good team.
Hope he goes to IND or MIA.

Yeah, and that's good for the Mavs.

There are two kinds of fans of the '14-'15 Mavs - Wright fans, and wrong fans. ************* Give CP hate a rest and enjoy this ride.

Yeah, and that's good for the Mavs.
Definitely.
But if Doc Rivers is smart enough to not employ that offensive lineup very often (and he is), Marion would still be a very nice piece for them, especially if he's willing to accept the super-sub role he had here in 2011.
They'd be a rebounding machine, that's for sure.

Ok, explain why the Pacers are so dominant then? We had better floor spacing then they did last year.

Yeah, and that's good for the Mavs.
With Chris Paul and Crawford/Reddick, that lineup is good enough to consistently score on any defense the Mavs put out there so yeah.

Marion was a 36% three point shooter last year, and with his athleticism now sharply declining will need to continue or improve that to extend his career. With Barnes and Dudley as the major competition at SF Marion could actually play a significant role on a "contender". But his best bet for a ring is still Cleveland if by no other virtue than being in the East.

Not knocking Marion (big fan) but he was NEVER a shooter. Love Marion but his offensive skill set resembles an 8 year old. He will always be remembered as the FT shooter with the quickest release.

We've had luck with non 3P shooters becoming more than serviceable here (Kidd, Stephenson, VC) but expecting Marion to improve on 3s past what he did last year, ... not going to happen.

Still, if he's going to take a league min deal, he and the MAVS should revisit the plethora of reasons he won't fit here next year and figure out 18-20 minutes fits both this point in his career and the needs of the MAVS and then we can hoist another trophy together.

From what I'm reading, vet's minimum is all the Clips, Cavs and Heat can offer, no one has cap space.

Ok, explain why the Pacers are so dominant then? We had better floor spacing then they did last year.

Aren't you proving my point?
We have incredible floor spacing (thanks Dirk!) and that's why our offense was one of the best in the NBA...
As a matter of fact, look at the top 8 offensive teams in the league: Clippers, Rockets, Wolves, Blazers, Thunder, Spurs, Suns, Mavs. What do they all have in common? Their stars are incredible shooters (AKA floor spacers).

As for the Pacers "dominance" (which lasted for a chunk of the regular season, then tapered off significantly as the year finished):
Spacing is incredibly important from an OFFENSIVE perspective, as I said. It has nothing to do with defense, which was the Pacers' strong suit.
They were dominant because of their defense, but that doesn't change the fact that their offense was just as predicated on floor spacing as every other offense in the NBA.

Do you seriously believe that even the most "hands-off" offenses in the league - the Thunder, for example - aren't always running according to a scheme based primarily around floor spacing?

If you're seriously saying something as ridiculous as "floor spacing isn't really that important in basketball," I hope you're ready to back that up.

Why are you so good in "stepping in it" all the time? Dirk killed Pre-2000 basketball. You mean you really didn't know that? The Pacers were a good team that fell apart in the post season in case you didn't notice. Actually they fell apart before that and were no longer dominant for the final quarter of the season. No spacing no scoring. The defenses are too good when they don't have to move far to help defend. That is modern basketball at the NBA level.
