Oj Mayo is a top 5 SG

Now I know some of you are going to try and argue against statistics and facts and reality and common sense but I will post this so we can all just stop trying to judge this guy based off a sling of isolated performances.

Some quick facts about O.J. Mayo so far this year:

He is 5th among 2 guards in Shooting Percentage
He is 8th among SGs in adjusted shooting percentage
He is 7th among SGs in assist per game.
He is 5th among SGs in points per game
He is 8th among SGs in Steals per game
He is 8th among SGs in 3 point percentage

No other SG in basketball is top 10 in all of those categories. Not Kobe. Not Wade. Not Harden.

According to Synergy Sports O.J. Mayo is the 4th best in basketball in Isolation plays. (Links to synergy sports generally don't work, but if you don't believe me go look yourself)

O.J. Mayo is 5th among SGs in Estimated Wins added.

O.J Mayo is 5th among SGs in Value added

Kobe
Wade
Harden
Mayo

But please go on about how terrible at everything he is bored1

Mayo has also made some big defensive plays.  I'd like to see him improve his shot selection, but he is definitely a keeper.

He is 11 in per and that's only because Dirk missed half the season.

He had a stretch were he shot 55% from 3. Whats your point? We evaluate guys on 5 game stretches now?

We declared roddy was the savior based on one game.

Only fair to view his stats since Dirk has taken over primary scorer again. As dirk improves Mayo should get even less looks.

Its the clutch moment of the game, a big shot needed.  Whos hands do you want the ball in?  Kobe, Wade, Harden?... or OJ Mayo?  Nuff said...

A 8 game stretch where B James averaged 15 min and less than 4 points, less than 4 RPG proved to the whole board we won the Tyler Zeller trade and encouraged the 2nd most popular thread this week. Lol

Mayo is one of those guys who pad their stats vs. garbage teams in garbage situations but disappear completely when it counts (crunch time or big games).

Vince Carter is also such a guy, but much better (and more flashy) at statpadding than Mayo...

this is what i cannot understand not Oj mayo

True.  I would have liked to see Morrow in there instead of Crowder.  With Mayo though, i understand we HAVE to play the guy essentially.  He is a very good shooter and not a bad player in general.  My point though, is that he just has ZERO clutch and killer instinct inside of him. Some say "that will come" in time, but i dunno....  i surely hope so, but im just not seeing it.

It feels like we have a tough decision to make with him in the offseason.

True. Kris Hump could be considered top 10 PF the last few years if you just look at stats.

My point is that all of this "Top 5" talk is pointless, because stats dont tell the whole story.  Of course its nice to have a good "starting quality" SG for once on this team, but him as the #2 option behind Dirk is clearly a pipedream and just not going to cut it, if we truly plan on being a legitimate contender again anytime soon.

And yes, when the majority of the games weve lost this year have come down to the clutch plays NOT being made, i think they are DEFINITELY more important than the other shots.  Whoopie, you can make an uncontested 3 in 1st quarter.  I wanna see it when the pressure is turned up.

Our losses aren't about "clutchness" at all.  The losses are mostly due to our poor half-court offense at crunch time.  It generally comes down to burning a lot of clock and taking a really bad shot.  That is why we lose so many close games.  Our opponents usually get better shots at the end.
