Game 114: Latos question marks

Game 114: Latos question marks

Like playing Swisher in LF and batting him ahead of Gomes.  And whether or not the team as a whole can finally hit a pitcher who rarely breaks 90. bangheadbanghead

Salazar bringing the heat with two Ks and a leadoff bunt GO, thank you Reds for being aggressive and bunting on a 1-0 count to start the game.

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

Salazar's fastball is not bad, but his slider is not breaking, lots of them hanging high, so far too high to be hit, but...
Gives up his first baserunner on a fastball down and in that Pena golfs for a liner into CF.
Definitely challenging hitters with the fastball, need to find his slider though to put them away.

@#$@^@#$@ Salazar having his PC rocket up and getting victimized on good pitches, throws a 97 MPH fastball below the knees that results in an infield single to SS.bangheadbangheadbanghead

23$@^@$#@#%^@$#@#%@ Freaking infield single comes back and bites us as Salazar hangs a freaking slider to Zach FREAKING COZART!!!!!!
THis is absolutely ridiculous, always happens to the Indians.  2-2 pitch too, with the pitcher up next, our pitchers have to learn to BURY that pitch, for crying out loud!bangheadbangheadbangheadbangheadbanghead

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

After throwing 4 straight fastballs, he speeds up the bat by hanging a slider on the inner half.  Makes sense if you go outer half because even if the bat is sped up, the ball is away, so chances are slim he can square it up.  Not so when the pitch is middle in.

Our starting staff is turning into Kluber and Bauer and rain for 72 Auer's.

Salazar has the stuff, just bad pitch choice/execution.  Seriously, he sped up Cozart's bat SO much that the ball HIT THE FREAKING FOUL POLE!  In other words, he throws it anywhere towards the outer half of the plate he would have gotten a swing and miss or something off the end of the bat.

And Gomes hits a looper to lead off the 3rd that is freaking caught.
Anyone can describe the infield single?

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

Saw a replay of the GO by BRantley, but man he gets out of the box slowly, it seems like his swing has so much momentum there is a major pause after his follow-through before he starts running to first.  Not sure if he was going full-speed either but if he had gotten out of the box quicker, he probably would have gotten on because the ball kicked off the 1Bman and dribbled to the 2Bman who threw to the pitcher.ohlord

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

Everyone knows Salazar has a blazing fastball, but even if he puts Cozart away with a K, his line would be 4 k's and one hit in two scoreless innings....sounds great, but 40+ plus pitches to get through two...Yikes! Against the White Sox he had nine K's by the fourth inning , but threw 100 pitches. They just keep fouling him off.

No worries, mate. We get at least one homer this inning and at least tie it up.

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

watching salazar on gameday. assuming gameday is close, what i saw is what i've seen before from salazar:

1) his "waste" pitches, the ones he should be using to try to make the batters go out of the zone, are often terrible. instead of 2-3 inches off the plate, they're 6 inches or a foot. most MLB hitters are going to recognize those and leave them be, which makes them just a waste on salazar's pitch count.

2) when he has to throw a strike, and too often when he doesn't, salazar is in the middle of the plate. 2 inches to the right or left of those and he'd probably be fine. but MLB hitters will hnit anything right down the middle, even salazar's stuff.

bottom line, he's still a work in progress. if he can stay out of the middle of the plate and be closer with his waste pitches, he'll become one of the better pitchers in baseball. if he can't, he'll continue to be what he is now - a tantalizing talent who never quite takes the step everyone thinks he should.

Very true, he doesn't have enough confidence in his secondary stuff to get the swings and misses or swings and weak contact necessary to keep his PC down.
Man Brantley needs a break.  Another bad AB by him, first pitch swinging after the pitcher just went 3-1 on the previous batter?  After being overly aggressive the previous game?  And not running 100% out of the box on your previous GO?
Santana needs to come through....and he doesn't, freaking pops up!@#$@%^@   A freaking overswing.
Just like Chisenhall just did on a freaking 93 MPH fastball above the belt inside half.  Geezus these hitters are so undisciplined!
And of course Chisenhall fails.
Sigh, if BRantley and santana struggle in the clutch, this offense is really just BAD.

dammit. you put 1-2 on with 0 outs and have 3-4-5 up, you have to do SOMETHING to get back in the game. that's just lame, very lame.

Man why do I bother.  That kind of inning makes me sick,  Like all the little things are done wrong.  We get two on and NO OUTS and don't score.  They have two on with TWO OUTS an the pitcher on deck, and they get a freaking 3 run homer!bangheadbangheadbangheadbangheadbanghead

this offense isn't bad - 5th in the AL in runs scored. we just see how it could be better.

Even more pathetic, in spite of getting 2 hits in that inning, Latos is still not even averaging 12 pitches an inning. bangheadbangheadbanghead

Re: Game 114: Latos question marks

Salazar has no confidence in his changeup, only thrown it once.
He needs something slow-slow to keep the hitters off of his fastball.  The slider is too fast to get a swing and miss on pure velocity change.  Bauer has both a slider and a curve, it might be something Salazar has to go to if he doesn't like his changeup.

Game over, time to do work.  Fastball down the middle at the belt, fastball only 93 MPH...2 MPH is a big difference.ohlord
