Re: Prospects Report

I've updated things.

Laporta, Valbuena and Satana are really ripping things up. Rondon, De La Cruz and Berger is making our FOR potential looking a lot whole lot better than it is right now and Sowers is looking like a whole lot better call-up than Huff (if necessary).

Re: Prospects Report

hopefully De La Cruz will be healthy.  they had to shut him down for a couple of weeks.

They need him to be healthy and become the pitcher he has the potential of being. With adam miller basically done, we will need rondon and De la cruz to come through to hopefully back up carmona (who needs to figure things out soon)

Re: Prospects Report

Totally. I mean I don't expect all of Miller/Rondon/De La Cruz to pan out, but we only need one of them too. A rotation of one of one FOR guy (Miller/Rondon/De La Cruz), Carmona, Laffey, Huff and Sowers/Lewis/another pitching prospect isn't too shabby and is incredibly cheap. In my opinion we have plenty of rotation depth but need at least one person to emerge as a FOR starter (because we simply cannot afford one on the open market).

But hey, lets dream of that Miller, Rondon, De La Cruz, Carmona and Huff rotation where they all reach their full poentiel. Right?

Re: Prospects Report

Dave,

very interesting data and I like your narrative summary.  What is it with Lofgren?  I do not know much about him but from what I have heard (from the forum) next to Miller he is our next biggest..."letdown"?  Is it injuries?  Mental?  What?

Re: Prospects Report

I'm not going to pretend to be a scout, so I really don't know. Looking at the numbers, he started the season off being extremely lucky (allowing virtually no hits) but has steadily been improving (striking out more and walking less). It's way to early to say anything, but I suppose I would be surprised if he suddenly turned everything around and went from ace pitching prospect, to value-less, to ace pitching prospect in less than 3 years; but lets hope that he does!

From the scouting reports I've read on Lofgren, he doesn't seem to have FOR "stuff" either. So even if he does turn it around we probably aren't looking anyone who has more poential than Sowers/Laffey/Huff/Reyes, but clearly it's always good to have depth and the more guys you have the more likely one is to become better than their projections.

Re: Prospects Report

Thanks for responding Dave.  Apologies for my late reply...been swamped with my work, family and non-baseball life (I hate when that happens).  I know it is the wrong place but I probably won't get back to your other thread so permit me to say here heckuva great job & analysis on the statistical "woes" of the tribe '09 bullpen!  My hat is off, sir...

Any chance you could add Cord Phelps for your next update?

Sure thing. If I get a bit of time today (and remember) I'll add him to list.

As desired:

Player Level AB AVG OBP SLG OPS TBAVG TBOBP TBSLG TBOPS TBwOBA
phelps, robert A+ 90 0.289 0.44 0.422 0.862 0.26 0.417 0.374 0.791 0.368

It looks like he's getting a few too many hits on groundballs and is showing very, very little power. His plate discipline is very, very impressive though. Worth keeping an eye on him.

Re: Prospects Report

I  was wondering how Zach Putnam was looking.  Was his promotion to AA a sign that he seems to be moving fast or was it just to plug an injury?  Just Curious.

His move to AA was more tied to his move to the bullpen. In my opinion, the move to bullpen was another preemptive and foolish decision like Rondon (although much less serious). However Putnam is doing quite well in AA, he has a 2.68 FIP with an insane groundball ratio over 6 and third. I can't say I know what the team's plans are for him in terms of starting or staying in the pen but if he stays in the pen he could certainly be on a real fast track there; especially if guys like Lewis continue to struggle but we manage to the win a whole bunch of games and appear to be back in it.

Re: Prospects Report

June 1st Update

Santana is still ridiculous and AAA cools off as a whole; and we still have a while lot of a young, promising pitching on.

Re: Prospects Report

June 15th Update

Laporta and Santana are in their own league and Brantely keeps on looking like a great leadoff hitter. The rest of our position players are not showing anything to get excited about in teh near future, other than possibly Weglarz and our pitching looks strong from AA down.

July 6th Update

Same old, same old. Santana, Laporta, Weglarz and Rondon are our biggest assets and Marte isn't slowing down... in fact, he's speeding up. Mills and Rivero are probably the only two big disappointments, unless you actually believed in Lofgren's magic act the first month or two of the season.

Re: Prospects Report

Will someone else please post on this thread? I feel like it gets a fair amount of hits but this section of forum has no other traffic. I'm tempted to move it to other section...

In other news, or system is legit. We have a lot of B level guys who look promising and Santana, Weglarz, Knapp, Hagadone and House have A-level potential (well Santana is pretty much already there). Here is the August 6th update.
