Re: Indians hire Francona

Well I may be a minority of one, but I don't like this decision. Francona is a great manager to be sure but this move is designed strictly to give hope that we can turn this around with just a few tweaks to the roster given the proper field leadership. Some fans might be fooled into believing that but I sure am not. This team is woefully short of talent.

This means we are going to waste another year before everyone agrees we have to rebuild. Which means another year before we turn it around for real some day (I can only hope). I sure hope I live long enough to see the Indians win a title. The only good news about hiring Francona might be that it will leave Shapiro and Antonelli no place to hide next fall if the talent fails to pull off a miracle.

The worst part of the bad news to me is this likely means Sandy Alomar, who is perfect for this town and this team, is more than likely going to develop into a great manager somewhere else.

Doesnt matter, until the real problem is addressed: The removal of the three stooges of Shapiro-Mirabelli and Antonetti ;the losing will continue

I'm happy that they at least have a manager who has tasted success previously and Francona has had a lot of success, albeit with a high payroll team. I'm hopeful that his managing acumen had something to do with that success.

Tony LaRussa could manage this team... That's not the problem. Look to the front office

Ok good now all need is : left fielder, third baseman , first baseman ( at least one of these has to be right handed power hitter) and 3 starting pitchers ( at least one has to be left handed) and we might just be a playoff team again . Oh wait and we have to hope there our 0 major injuries because we have no depth .

I understand the pessimism; it's something you can't avoid as a Tribe fan.  But this is pretty exciting.  It'll generate some buzz and at least it's something to hang onto after basically the most disappointing second half imaginable.  And hey, mediocre teams can make - and advance within - the playoffs now, so there's that.

Yes the Tribe has a holes on its Major League roster along with little coming from the minors in the immediate future, but an upgrade is an upgrade...
Francona>>>>>>>>>>&g t;>>>>>>>>>>>> Acta.

The next step is who TF gets to fill out his staff, most importantly the pitching coach. Oakland and Baltimore are not exactly replete with talent, Showalter and Melvin obviously made a difference.

Four and a half months till sunny Arizona.

Good news: Terry is the best manager this team has had since Dolan bought them.

Bad news: Terry is the only competent person in the current Tribe front office.

Replacing Acta with Terry is a good start. I hope this is just the beginning of cleaning up this mess.

One thing this speaks to is a large disconnect: in baseball, the Indians FO is generally highly respected.

Among Cleveland fans, though, they think they're all a bunch of idiots. See: the post directly above this.

If the Indians FO is as bad as some would have us believe, why did Francona accept the job?

Exactly. Francona said Shapiro and Antonetti were the #1 and #2 reasons he took the job.

That's because even if he screws up, they will not fire him.

Why take the job? ESPN analysts do not exactly make chump change. And he could have been a candidate for any job that opened.

RE: Indians hire Francona

I like the move. But what I don't get is why other people on this forum say he's a good manager but it's a bad decision?

Naturally most of us would love to see a major shakeup in the organization but we all were pretty damn sure that it wasn't going to happen this year.

So now that they have a proven manager, if this team still doesn't do anything, then it's going to be very difficult for them to throw Francona under the bus given his stature. Dolan will have to look at Antonetti and Shapiro for the reasons this team hasn't progressed. Making Francona the scapegoat isn't going to work with the fans this time.
