Tito's Big Decisions

When do he start to make those Big Cuts on who's stay and who goes? Is it Marson or Gomes etc.

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

gomes isn't beating out marson until he shows the team he's a competent enough catcher to back up santana.

from what i've read, he hasn't done that this spring. so his next chance will be in columbus.

If Giambi makes the team, it sounds like it is because we are getting a player/coach package.

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

I think the decisions are the 5th starter (basically that's Kazmir vs Dice K so...)

two bench spots - I don't think there is any question Aviles and Marson have spots... (as we've seen that last couple of games Gomes is a LONG way from being able to catch in the bigs)
the other two are up for grabs with Raburn and Giambi being Francona favorites but a few other folks having shots

the bullpen sports... still a couple up for grabs...  do you keep a guy like Capps or go with youngsters?

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

The World baseball Classic is holding up these Decisions the position moves may not be made until the Indians get back most of their player that are currently in the Classic.

The pitching moves could come at any time.

unless capps is just light's out, better bets would be shaw and allen.

RE: Tito's Big Decisions

One decision might be whether to keep one or two left handed relievers. It's possible one of Albers, Shaw, Allen would be a better bullpen choice than Huff, Hill, or Barnes.

Another thing that might factor in is the organizations long term view of the player. Gomes, for instance, is he a catcher with some utility or a utility guy that can catch? If they think it's the former he'll likely end up in Columbus. Yeah, he's gets a ticket out of town because they think too much of him to give him a big league job: such is life. The same could apply to Cody Allen.

Hmm...oh! Organizational depth. Down right scary for MLB club in the outfield once you get past Carrera and the NRIs. If they jettison Carrera and the NRIs (Francisco maybe) won't accept an assignment you've got no experience there. The pitching depth is better than before and the middle infield looks pretty good; Phelps (I think he still has a shot to make the club), Diaz, and actually Luis Hernandez (nice glove).

I'm thinking the decisions rough out like this:

Starter: one of Kazmir, Matasasuka, Bauer, Carrasco

Bullpen: three of Albers, Shaw, Allen, Huff, Hill, Barnes

Bench: two of Giambi, Carrera, Francisco, Raburn, Gomes, Phelps

Oh! From what I've been hearing about Phelps is if this spring was two springs ago Kipnis would have a problem on his hands: he's been much more impressive than the incumbent at the plate and in the field.

RE: Tito's Big Decisions

Francisco was given his unconditional release today so he's out if the running.

Also, Hill was added to the 40 man today, so I would assume he has a spot on the OD roster.

Federoff has looked good as a AAA outfielder in waiting.

Those are really interesting moves.  I didn't see either coming this early.

hill in means hagadone or huff out, i would guess.

the old indians would pick huff automatically because hagadone has options. i hope the new indians can get past that mentality. i'm hopeful.

The Francisco one didnt surprise me (he already signed with the Yankees).  But the Hill one did.... didn't think we were even remotely close to making decisions like that.

Hagadone has been impressive.  Not just good but dominate.  He's struck out nearly half the batters he's faced (7 of 15).   You'd think he'd need to fall on his face (or punch a wall) to lose a spot (especially with Barnes around).

Come to think of it, does Hill have an option available?  If so, placing him on the 40-man might be a way to option him and keep him (pacify), e.g. the reverse of the Francisco move.

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

Nah I said since day one Hill would be on the team...  they made that move quick rather than waiting!  he's looked good so far...
I don't think he counts anyone out as I think Perez, Vinnie P, Smith and Albers had it made all along as well
with Hill that's five
so two spots for the others with at least one lefty sure to be part of it if not both... Hagadone has looked great

maybe - but it's always a consideration that you can keep capps and put Shaw and allen in AAA so you have all of them rather than waive Capps...

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

13 pitchers to start the season would be like extending Spring Training.  Two (or more) guys could be battling for bullpen spots for an extra couple of weeks.

Re: Tito's Big Decisions

again, i'm hoping the new indians don't make the easy choice by keeping a vet over a kid who's better just because the kid has options. those moves haven't worked out that well for the indians over the years.

When hasn't it worked?  I know it didn't work when the youngster didn't have options, but can't remember when it did when they had options considering they can just be recalled.

I hope Huff makes the team, the pen will definitely need a long man between JIminez's jekyll and Hyde act, Myers coming from the pen (and in his last ST start, definitely seemed to run out of gas in the 4th, and Kazmir being out of baseball last year.
