Dice-K?

Dice-K?

From Rotoworld.com:

Sports Hochi reports that Daisuke Matsuzaka is deciding on minor league offers from the Indians, Marlins and Mets.
There's another report that says Matsuzaka could wind up deciding to return to Japan, but it's an unlikely proposition at this point. Matsuzaka struggled mightily after returning from Tommy John surgery in 2012 and is looking to re-establish his value, but it sounds like he'll have to fight for an Opening Day roster spot.

Sounds low-risk.  He hasn't pitched more than 150 innings since 2010, but is still only 32.

I'm doubtful he can show enough to push Bauer or Carrasco for the last rotation spot, but hey.....maybe he has his "gyroball" back.  eek1

Could be a good depth minor league signing.

Wouldn't expect him to ever do 2008 again but he could be a good fill in if someone goes down.

RE: Dice-K?

His career numbers are less than impressive. Even if he does regain form he's only average... his best WHIP is 1.324 and his ERA (excluding 2008) was at best 4.40 but usually much higher. Didn't realize his numbers were that bad.

Meh.

This team pretty desperately needs average pitchers. An average starting rotation would give us a chance to be relatively competitive.

His best chance at being useful is probably as a reliever.

Re: Dice-K?

I would prefer keeping a rotation spot in Columbus open for some of our young pitchers(Bauer, Carrasco, Kluber, Barnes, Soto, etc) Some of these pitchers will be on the varsity but I expect Kazmir to start at AAA.

Eh, I can't imagine that our minor leagues are so full that we can't squeeze a guy like Daisuke in at AAA for a while. I think they will know within a short timeframe if he has anything left in the tank, and the same is probably true for Kazmir.

I can't completely explain it, but I actually am pretty optimistic about Kazmir.

I am actually positive about Kazmir as well. He offers much more to the Indians than Dice-k.  He left handed and has already demonstrated that he can throw 96- again.  Very shortly we'll find out if reality matches are optimism.

Kazmir is younger and was better when he was good. Daisuke flirted with being pretty good, but maintained a pretty high BB rate. That's why I think he might actually be able to succeed in the bullpen.

i've always liked kazmir, but i wouldn't expect too much out of him. even if he's throwing 90-94, as reported. his command, which was never good, hasn't improved even as his K rate dropped. and his actual stats from winter league weren't pretty.

RE: Dice-K?

Masterson, McAllister, Myers are the only 3 guys I feel safe about in our rotation. Bauer, Ubaldo, Kazmir, Carrasco (prob won't be ready), and Kluber are all HUGE Question Marks. Bring in Dice-K and Carl Pavano. That's 7 SP's competeing for the #4 and #5 slot in the rotation. See which 2 thrive the most in Spring Training, and go from there.

And Ubaldo's been working his tail off this winter with Francona and Callaway. If he shows zero improvement from last year, he's a bust. All I want is a 3.90 ERA from him. Is that too much to ask for?

I look at Kazmir and see a guy who could either make it as a starter (after a stint in Columbus) or be a solid loogey.

Any way you look at it, I think this was a very good signing.

I wonder if Kazmir's contract has an out clause. I'd hate to have to rush a decision on him.

RE: Dice-K?

This is a good question I went over and read as many press releases I could find and the only details I could find was it is a straight up minor league deal with a spring invite this most likely is a question that may only be able to be answered by Shappy, Anti or Kazmir.

Sometime baseball reference will have these detail when a player has any type of opt out clause but they are not showing any details of the contract with the Indians at all.

Cots has nothing at all on the Kazmir contract so it could be that the exact details where never released by the Indians or MLB league offices.

I expect its a straight up minor league with a spring training invite. If he lights it up he makes the team if he cant break into our rotation he might as well go to the minors.
