6 Users on line...

...compared to 680 on the Brown's board. Too bad, I come here for my Indian's info and wish there was more interest.

I love this board, however, sometimes I am scrutinized for bashing our FO and not caring about WAR numbers, so it does push people away.
I am all in though.

Listen, I love the Browns, always have, always will.

BUT, I can never understand how so many people get so fired up over so few games.  Sixteen games a season, about 50 hours worth of football a year, total.  For crying out loud, how much is there to talk about, really?  Talk about small sample size!

That's why baseball is more fun and more challenging to me.  A ton more to analyze and a lot more that is accessible to fans (sorry, but I'm never going to be smart enough to analyze whether individual offensive linemen are doing a good job, outside of maybe sacks given up, yards the backs rush for, or holding calls, obvious stuff like that).

I can certainly understand why some people find baseball boring and uninteresting, but the complete reverence people have for the mere fifty hours of action their team plays on the gridiron each year completely escapes me.  There's simply not enough to talk about in that sport...and yet people try to find something! (Especially when each year's rallying cry is: bring on the draft!  ...zzzzzzzzzzzz....)

There are only 10 to 12 minutes of real, live action in an NFL game. Look it up. It's been timed out. Four hours for 12 minutes! It has become the most unwatchable sport. I don't get the appeal of wasting an entire afternoon for it anymore.

Trust me, we may have a small hearty group but we go through every tidbit of information. We don't need 680 people with short attention spans to cover what we discuss with only 10 people.rolleyes

RE: 6 Users on line...

Baseball requires patience and an appreciation for the nuances. It also has more of the "game within the game" that can keep fans from losing teams interested in the 9 month marathon that starts with pitchers and catchers reporting. And because of the quantity of stats, it's a fantasy geek's dream.

It should be no surprise why football is so popular in America. It's violent, it features short bursts of high intensity action and the fact that it only occurs once a week for your team means that there's lots of opportunity for pent up anticipation and ideal for gamblers. Every game is more meaningful to a team's football season than the last game of a baseball team's long west coast road trip in April.

Football is far better suited for the younger, short-attention span, aggressive, video-game generation, especially now that baseball doesn't have the steroid era which produced rock stars with colorful names that included the word "bash." Like it or not, the sport was far more entertaining then than it is now, where the most compelling story is whether we would have another triple-crown winner in Detroit.

And remember, women who are not already die-hard baseball fans really do prefer higher scoring games featuring the long ball and without it, many just shrug their shoulders at baseball, calling it boring by comparison.

A good old pitcher's duel is great for those who appreciate the skill and consistent precision it requires, but it's not exactly compelling TV when compared to football.

couple of things. Browns board, by far the most negative, depressing, non educated place any person could ever frequent, I try to get info. on "the happenings" of the Browns and DO post periodically, but it's all about he sucks, they suck, we'll always suck, trade this guy, cut that guy blah, blah and 95% of the posters don't know their respective asses about anything fball. Cav's board, much better, but still with some of the aforementioned. Indians board., 95% here belong on Big bang theory, wayyy too much interested in war, obp, bpa, ppp, ttt wtvr, and that's got a plce in how a team MAY perform, but sometimes stats don't add up to a hill of beans if players, can't mesh, do drugs, hate the coach, the schemes don't fit that player or players respective abilities , etc. etc. but at least here, not a lot of name calling and crap that has no business in discussions, becasue you know how"tough" guys can be behing a computer screen. ahaha. anyway all have a great day can't wait for spring tr.

Fair, even perceptive, comments, Dean...thanks for your thoughts.  I'll add that I always thought I loved stats, but I never knew how much they are at the core of some people's enjoyment of the sport.  Me, the game between the lines comes first, not what each game adds to the ledger.  But I've come to peace with the idea that it doesn't matter why you like the game, just that you do.  I'll never quite accept that there aren't some pretty important intangibles at work in a flesh-and-blood endeavor, but I've learned a lot from people smarter than I am about quantifiable insights to the game, and while in some ways they sadly take away from the heroic nature of the sport and drive casual fans away, it is what it is, and I've tried to integrate as much as possible without losing an appreciation for the basic charm of the game.

Thanks for weighing in, and yes, we have a spring camp worth looking forward to!

Re: 6 Users on line...

Um the Browns board is part of the Orange and Brown Report website which can be found here.  If you go to their forums section, they have an Indians forum which reports 800+ users online at the moment as does the Cavaliers board and the Browns board.  This forum is not part of that particular network and quite honestly I suspect that their counter is simply counting users that are logged in instead of actual users browsing the forum because there is ZERO chance that 800+ users are currently browsing the Cleveland Cavaliers forum which is here.

Re: 6 Users on line...

Stats facilitate discussion and have a heavy understanding of what makes a ballplayer valuable. The only stat I care about when I watch a baseball game is winning.

I would not call them at the "core of my enjoyment of the game". I'm not sure what type of discussion we could have here without stats. Every person who has ever argued for one player over another has used stats- they may be traditional stats, but they are stats.

I have been to the Indian board there and despite the high user count there is limited conversation and has been stated not near as deep ...

I find myself wondering if the user counts are bogus or somehow linked to the other sites on the orange and brown

for quality the site there does not compare but if Jason likes it there it is addition by subtraction for us

edited for the following ... 888 users on site at this time and not an indian post since yesterday ... and only one thread hit since the 23rd

Re: 6 Users on line...

I don't like to yell over people on a message board. That is all that can happen in most of the Browns forums.

I also like to have a sense of who I am talking to and what their perspective is. For most of the regular posters here, I can connect their positions to try to see where they are coming from. I even have some mental pictures biggrin

It's December, and it's Steeler week.

Simple as that.

Baseball not a hot topic right now anywhere except among the true die hards.

I like the Browns board and it reflects how rabid we are about the Brownies. But sometimes, you'd think they haven't become civilized yet.
I like this board better.
