Indians sign Swisher

4 years @ $56 million with an option for a 5th year

BREAKING: Nick Swisher has agreed to a four-year, $56 million deal with the Indians. Vesting $14M option for a 5th year could make it $70M.

Not a big fan of this vesting option. But otherwise I like the signing.

This is the price of fielding an interesting (possibly competitive) team while we develop young players.  Which should put some more fannies in the seats as we rebuild (again).  Let's hope it doesn't bite us in the ass in years 4+.

Certainly interesting. If the PA threshold in the fourth year is high enough, the vesting option doesn't really concern me.

People are really gonna complain about the strikeouts this year, though. (Not me so much, but some people)

Re: Indians sign Swisher

I hope the vesting option is pretty high, cause I just don't see 5 productive years, but nice to see them being aggressive.

So what does the line up look like?  I know it will be determined by who plays DH, but here's my shot.

Kipnis
Acab
Santana
Swisher
Reynolds
Brantley
dh
Chizz
Stubbs/Carrara?

The contract also includes a $14 million option for a fifth season that will "easily vest, the source said, making the potential total value of the contract $70 million.

I'm willing to bet this vesting option is what put the Indians over the top and the fact that if that source is right and that it's easy to obtain it must be either games played or at-bats.  So just as long as Swisher is healthy (which he basically has been his entire career), he's basically getting a 5-year deal.  But even if that is the case this is a great signing.  As I already said he never gets hurt and you can pencil him in for 25 HR's and 85-90 RBI year in and year out.  He's not a mega star that's going to hit 40+ HR's, but what he is is consistent.  With Swisher you're getting a guy who's very consistent so you don't mind paying the price tag for that.  IMO a very good signing and a nice early Christmas gift for us Tribe fans.

Deal does not become official until he passes a physical.  According to Hoynes the physical is not likely to take place until after Christmas,\.

When the deal becomes official the Tribe will need to find a spot for him on the 40 man roster.

Eh, I'm dropping his HRs down to 20 since he won't be playing half his games in The Bronx

Far better deal than signing Victorino or Ross. Sure the backend is worrisome but so it is with all FA signings. Will Pujols be worth $27 million in 2018, $28 million in 2019, and $29 million in 2020, and $30 million in 2021???

Can you imagine if he doesn't have a bounce-back year in 2013?

I have a feeling he saw his best days in St. Louis.

wow. while i philosophically don't like these kinds of deals, and i seriously doubt he'll be worth anything close to what he'll be earning in 3-4 years, it's hard not to be excited about adding his bat to the middle of the lineup.

now, trade cabrera and perez for another starting pitcher and some future contributors, and things will be looking good.

This is great news!  It's almost like we got Bauer for nothing.

Wow! What a crazy few weeks. Hey Cleveland! Are you ready? Because I’m coming home!  # RollTribe

Well are we ready? If nothing else this is going to be a radically different team to watch next year. Which can't be a bad thing considering last year. devil

Lump of coal.

Pressure's on now, Nick, more than it was during the playoffs. There's nothing like a big money contract where you're "the guy"and there's no one in the lineup that can hide your failures.

Prove me wrong, please. I 'm really concerned about having the franchise depend so much on someone who has never had to do something like this before. I fear the worst from such a heavy commitment, but really, truly hope for the best.

Our daughter has married a free-spirited but talented biker dude...all you can do is hope it works out now.
