He is only 29, I wouldn't have mind a 3 year deal. He is a few years removed from a 44-hr season

I agree, I like this 1 year deal a lot more than Youk on a 2 year.

I hate this sign this guy is trash a true strike out artist that bats around 220 he will also average 200 K's each season. 6 Mil for this guy that the Orioles left off their roster

Doesn't quite look like a done deal, but certainly probable. I like it a lot- a guy who's young who we could possibly control for a while (if we want), and finally a legitimate long-ball threat. Hopefully cheap too. He's a terrible 3B but only made 5 errors in 105 games at 1B last year, or he could even DH.

His BA is bad (but so was Youkillus) his OBP was the same as Kipnis's last year though (.335).

What exactly is your problem with me? I am sorry, but I want the Indians to win. I am not worried about numbers as long as they have a good nucleus and win as a team. Not everyone was awesome in the late 90's, but they did it together. I am not ok with mediocrity like you are. I could care less about Dolan's money and would never say we overpaid. It is what it is.

RE: Indians sign Mark Reynolds
His OBA helps offset the batting average and after playing awful the first half of 2012 he was very good the rest of the way. I expect he will be more productive than Youkilis. A good addition.

RE: Indians sign Mark Reynolds
Kotchman maybe the only offensive 1st that is worse than Reynolds but Reynold is a horrid defensive 1st so if you threw them both in a blend you may end up with 1 serviceable ballplayer. This is the type of blockbuster move I knew they were capable of making. mooseahoy wrote:

Either way, he seemed to work out just fine for the O's last year, regardless of whether or not they let him walk

Re: Indians sign Mark Reynolds
Totally ok with this signing, given the alternatives. Bill james projects him to have an 800 OPS next year, which seems reasonable given that he is moving out of the AL East, and is pretty much in line with his past results. Look at our lineup last year and find me some 800 OPS regulars- and now compare his hitting numbers with Casey Kotchman, and tell me why this is not an upgrade for us. Based on his average WAR numbers, I'd say we got a decent RH power hitter for 6 mil on a one year guarantee. He should be better than average at first defensively, and could easily slide to DH if we can bring in Swisher to play first/ OF, (doesn't hurt to dream). If this is our big signing for the winter I'd be disappointed, but we have so many holes, at least it's a start.

Maybe it's my lowered expectations but surprisingly, I am ok with this move. Not a huge or long-term commitment with significant power upside.

RE: Indians sign Mark Reynolds
No problem with you personally.
But honestly, a willingness to sign Mark Reynolds for three years shows a complete and utter lack of knowledge about how baseball works.
It is ironic that you are "not OK with mediocrity," but would he OK with signing Mark Reynolds for three years.

It is likely Kotchman 2.0, but there is at least the upside that he could make a decent DH at that price.
I have no problem because of the length and price, though.

I am ok because there is no one in the minors who is a 1b and hitting the cover off of the ball. This is the best they can sign these days, so you might as well make it worth a while.

RE: Indians sign Mark Reynolds
this is not a bad signing, even if he will strike out 200 times. he walks enough to remain a decent offensive player. wouldn't count on him to be even average at 1b.
he is the righthanded and younger version of russell branyan.
