If it were a minor league deal, I'd feel different but even though he's a lefty, I don't see what he gives you that Arredondo doesn't. I'd much rather have the starter depth with Redmond

I think a big reason we signed him is LH'ers hit .229, .323, .312, .635 off of him last year. Also, his GB/FB ratio was 0.96 last year --------------------------------------------- --- OhioRaiderNation wrote: wolfpack87 wrote: # reds sign LHP Manny Parra to a 1-yr contract. http://******/XdfICX

The reds are not taking chances, adding insurance a lh specialist, not playing around.

Nice article by Erardi (aren't they all?) on Aroldis. news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs....02010803&Ref=PH"Last year in the NLDS, he was a mostly a non-factor, a missile on the launching pad that never got launched."
========== It's all fun and games until someone is picked off second base.

--------------------------------------------- I definitely understand. I would have loved the signing on a minor league deal but he's going to take a deserving pitcher's spot in the majors. Assuming Masset starts the year on the DL and they carry 13 pitchers, you have 14 guys for those 13 spots: Cueto, Latos, Bailey, Arroyo, Chapman (starting in the 'pen), Leake (since Chapman won't be ready), Broxton, Marshall, LeCure, Simon, Arredondo, Hoover, Ondrusek, Parra. To me, from a glance, Parra is the odd man out. Then when you dig into the stats, he really appears to be as I think we can both agree his ability to get LH out is his most redeeming quality. Here are the most likely candidates to be ousted by Parra and his .229/.323/.312 line: Ondrusek vs. LH (career) .208/.298/.320 Ondrusek vs. LH (last year) .188/.333/.310 Arredondo vs. LH (career) .187/.290/.291 Arredondo vs. LH (last year) .157/.299/.282 Hoover vs. LH (small sample) .115/.207/.220 Simon vs. LH (last year) .261/.348/.397 Just for grins since he is all but a lock: LeCure vs. LH (last year) .208/.300/.313 Are they going to leave Simon with his 2.66 ERA and 1.64 GO/AO south so Parra can get a few lefties out at a worse clip than nearly the entire rest of the bullpen? (Not lashing out at you RD, just making observations)

Don't mind either signing. Insurance is always needed as the year progresses, we all know that. Can't always count on winning 25 of 28 w/o a star player as with Votto last year.

RE: 2012/2013 Red's Rumors / Roster Moves ........Going All In
First, I am glad we have a new lead-off hitter, but was surprised, as were the hosts of an MLB talk show interviewing Brandon Phillips last week.
Bowden: So Brandon. what do you think of the Red's new centerfielder?
BP: Oh? Do we HAVE a centerfielder now? Cause I aint ever seen Choo play CF. And, Cleveland must not have thought so either. I hated seeing Stubbs leave. With me at 2nd and him in CF, not much fell between us.
After BP hung up, Bowden was obviously surprised. He said that BP was just good friends with Stubbs, and he will bond with Choo. I agree, BP will like seeing someone on in front of him, but it just shows how close-knit this Reds team was last year.

BP will become good friends with Choo. 1, BP is just that type of personality. 2, he will love batting with guys on base. Theshadowman wrote: First, I am glad we have a new lead-off hitter, but was surprised, as were the hosts of an MLB talk show interviewing Brandon Phillips last week.

If that's the case, sorry BP, I don't care if he was your friend. Replacing him with Choo makes this team so much better. Show me any argument that says otherwise and I'll show you a flawed argument. No "true" CFer be damned. It won't cost us anywhere remotely close to what we've gained.
Mark Reynolds and Stubbs in the same line up is going be brutal.

Re: 2012/2013 Red's Rumors / Roster Moves ........Going All In
Myself, I would like to see Rolen retire and become a coach for the Reds, screw the Dodgers. Nothing new on Rolen, arb-eligible guysNo news out of Redsland today. Walt Jocketty was still waiting to hear back from Scott Rolen’s agent. “I’m kind surprised I haven’t heard by now,” he said. “They’ve got some other stuff going on.” Time is also winding down on the remaining arbitration-eligible players — Mat Latos, Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Shin-Soo Choo. “We really haven’t made a lot of progress on the big ones,” Jocketty said. “You’re always hopeful that you can get it done before you get the hearing.” Latos’ hearing is scheduled for Monday. The Reds have not gone to arbitration since 2002 when they won against Chris Reitsma. The gaps are fairly significant: Bailey: Filed for $5,800,000. Club countered at $4,750,000 Latos Filed for $4,700,000. Club countered at $ 4,150,000 Leake: Filed for $3,500,000. Club countered at $2,650,000 Choo: Filed for $8 million. Club countered at $6,750,000 Jocketty said the Reds are likely done as far as adding players. They signed left-hander Manny Parra and catcher Miguel Olivo Friday. “Those were two areas we wanted to shore up,” Jocketty said, “add another lerft-hander and get some depth at catcher.”

Re: 2012/2013 Red's Rumors / Roster Moves ........Going All In
Leake, Reds avoid arbitration with one-year dealBy Mark Sheldon / MLB.com | 2/6/2013 7:31 A.M. ETCINCINNATI -- The Reds and starting pitcher Mike Leake avoided arbitration early Wednesday morning when the right-hander agreed to a one-year, $3.06 million contract, sources told MLB.com. The Reds have not made any announcements on the deal. Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Leake made $507,000 last season. He is represented by the Beverly Hills Sports Council. During the exchange of numbers last month, Leake filed for $3.5 million, and the Reds had offered $2.65 million. Leake, 25, was 8-9 with a 4.58 ERA in 2012 as the Reds' fifth starter. He made a career-high 30 starts and threw 179 innings. It was an inconsistent year though as Leake began last season 0-5 with a 7.71 ERA over his first six starts before turning things around to go 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA over the next 13 starts. He threw the first complete game of his career during a 5-1 win over the Giants on June 29. The eighth overall Draft pick in 2009, Leake became only the 21st drafted player to bypass the Minors and go directly to the Major Leagues. In his three seasons since debuting in 2010, he is 28-22 with a 4.23 ERA in 83 games, including 78 starts. Leake is entering the 2013 season with an uncertain role. The Reds have added a sixth starter to the mix as Aroldis Chapman is expected to move out of the closer's spot to be in the rotation. The club has not indicated what its are plans for Leake, especially if Chapman is under some sort of innings limit. With Leake settled, the Reds have three arbitration players remaining in Mat Latos, Homer Bailey and Shin-Soo Choo.

Re: 2012/2013 Red's Rumors / Roster Moves ........Going All In
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 6 at 10:48pm CST] - Dodgers GM Ned Colletti suggested on MLB Network that free agent third baseman Scott Rolen will "probably end up some other place than Los Angeles,"Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports. The Dodgers had “some interest” in bringing Rolen on to provide depth at the corner infielder positions, Colletti acknowledged.

MLB.com's Mark Sheldon provided additional contract details for some of the players the Reds have signed within the last month including right-hander Logan Ondrusek, who has more than two dozen different escalators, incentives, and bonuses written into the two-year deal he signed last month. By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 11, 2013 at 3:31pm CST] The Reds announced that they avoided arbitration with outfielder Shin-Soo Choo, agreeing to a one-year deal for 2013 (Twitter link). The Boras Corporation represents Choo, who will hit free agency following the 2013 season. Choo filed for $8MM in arbitration with the Reds countering at $6.75MM, as MLBTR's Arbitration Tracker shows. Two of the five unsigned arbitration eligible players are Reds: Mat Latos and Homer Bailey. MLBTR's look at Arbitration Basics simplifies what can be a complicated process. By Ben Nicholson-Smith [February 11, 2013 at 3:44pm CST] The Reds announced that they signed right-handed reliever Clay Hensley to a minor league deal (Twitter link). Lapa/Leventhal represents Hensley. Hensley pitched for the Giants in 2012, making 60 relief appearances. He posted a 4.62 ERA with 7.5 K/9 and 5.3 BB/9 in 50 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. In seven seasons at the MLB level, Hensley has a 4.00 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9. Hensley provides Reds manager Dusty Baker with bullpen depth as Spring Training begins. Right-handers Jonathan Broxton, Jose Arredondo, Logan Ondrusek, Alfredo Simon and Sam LeCure project as contributors in the Cincinnati bullpen this coming season.
