Against some LH pitching, Choo sits and Heisey starts.  That's workable.

Choo is just what the doctor ordered for the lineup, but I'll be interested to see how the OF shakes out.  Choo has played a grand total of 83 innings in CF in his career and only 8 innings since 2006.  Was this due to the presence of Grady Sizemore, then Michael Brantley?  Or is he just not good at it?  I hope the Reds have done their homework.

I hate to see Didi go, especially if the Indians flip him for good, young pitching.  It stings even more that Choo will be a rental.

From John Fay

Would assume Choo will play center.  Hit .310/.393/.493 in leadoff spot this year. Have not been able to reach Jocketty.

Also, Heisey can be a defensive replacement in CF late in games if we need it.

RE: Stubbs and DiDi for Shin-Soo Choo?

From The Cleveland Plain Dealer (5:34 PM)

The Indians, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks are talking about a three-team deal that could reach conclusion tonight.

The Tribe is close to sending outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to the Reds. They could receive outfielder Drew Stubbs and shortstop prospect Didi Gregorious. CBSsports.com first reported that part of the deal.

It has since been learned that Arizona is involved in the deal. The Diamondbacks have been pursuing Tribe shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, but as of this moment it's believed Cabrera is not involved.

I'll be interested to see who the other position player is coming back.  Major leaguer? Minor Leaguer?  Reds still need a backup SS.  Aviles maybe?

I read somewhere (in the past hour) that Choo was tried in CF with Seattle when he was a young player, and he simply couldn't cut it at that position.  But, the writer also stated that it may be different now that Choo is a more experienced and confident player.

Plus, like was stated by one of the writers above, GABP is a good place (due to the short fences) for a guy to play CF if he doesn't have a lot of range.

RE: Stubbs and DiDi for Shin-Soo Choo?

Seattle has a massive outfield, do they not? Pretty big difference between there and GABP.

That being said, if he can't cover the ground that is a concern, but his bat may make up for any fielding issues he has in center. Plus he has a gun attached to his shoulder, so that will help.

That is what I am thinking as well.  They seem to really like him.

From Lance

Reds would essentially give up 9 yrs of contract control of Di Di (6yrs) and Stubbs (3yrs) for 1 year of Choo... as a bridge to Billy H.

How many of those years would/could Cozart be the SS?  How many of those years would could Hamilton be the CF?  we are really giving up a few years of contract control of Didi.  We can always draft or trade for another SS in the next 3 or 4 years.  Plus, we have other SS in our system who might end up being good in a few years.

Think about this for a moment...

Choo ~ .380 OBP -> 228 Times Reaching Base
Phillips ~ .320 OBP -> 192 Times Reaching Base

vs.

Cozart ~ .300 OBP -> 180 Times Reaching Base
Stubbs ~ .300 OBP -> 180 Times Reaching Base

Add all that up = 60 more runners on base for Votto

Plus, if Choo walks, you could potentially land a draft pick to draft said SS.

Exactly.  That is why I have been for this trade.  Plus, you may see Phillips OBP go up with Choo batting in front of him and Votto batting behind him.

I've always felt that BP's best spot in the line-up is in the #2 hole. When he doesn't feel the need to try to hit the HR, he's very, very good at hitting the ball to RF.  He's very productive when he's willing to do that.

With Choo a threat to run when on 1st base, that opens up a nice hole on the right side of the IF for BP to punch the ball through.

With Votto at the plate with men on 1st & 3rd and nobody out - Good things are often going to happen.

From John Fay

Choo's on-base .393. Reds leadoff guys was .254 and got 756 plates appearances. That means reaching base 297 times, instead of 192.

The numbers you listed there Fiesta would have taken the Reds from 21st in runs to 14th last season

RE: Stubbs and DiDi for Shin-Soo Choo?

Of course I will be happy to jump on board the Choo train (sorry, that made me feel like woody paige), but I would be even happier if we subbed Cozart and a pitcher (like Corcino) for didi.

Still, it would appear that the Reds are doing their best to not stand pat (like 2010 offseason) and will be "all in" this season.

Me Likey!
