Jay Mariotti article about WSCR's Dan Bernstein

Jay Mariotti article about WSCR's Dan Bernstein

Not too often that I absolutely agree with Mariotti about an issue. But I do on this one. Bernstein's 'problem' is that he is an equal opportunity abuser... he doesn't differentiate bad callers from good callers... and when he gets on an abuse roll he comes off as an immature arrogant little pr**k caller rather than a radio host. The difference is that he doesn't go away after about 1 minute... he keeps going on and on.

When it happens, I've found a very simple solution. I turn off the radio.

The unfortunate part, for him and WSCR, is that the rest of the time, he's very good.

The text of Mariotti's article and a link to it are below...

Link

About 10 years ago, I urged WSCR-AM talk host Dan Bernstein to leave Chicago and become the next Bob Costas. He is that intelligent, that versatile, that fearless. Instead, he stayed in Chicago and became the first Dan Bernstein.

Which is fine, except for one recurring problem: The guy is so needlessly rude to callers, I'd rather hear a cacophony of police sirens blaring over jackhammers as Hawk Harrelson tried to blab above it all.

If not for this issue, Bernstein would be the best sports-talk show host in the city and maybe the country. Instead, he and his host are borderline unlistenable. And the thing is, when Bernstein is matched with someone other than regular partner Terry Boers, he isn't nearly as surly. Don't they realize insults and intimidation only make the callers more tentative, more nervous -- and less likely to call in or listen?

If you can't tolerate audience participation -- the very dynamic that drives sports-talk radio, I thought -- then don't take phone calls.

Disclosure: While I draw paychecks from ESPN, I work for the four-initialed behemoth as a daily panelist on a national TV program, not as a local radio competitor. Additional disclosure: When I did work for ESPN 1000 three years ago, I competed against Boers and Bernstein and, interestingly enough, won a decisive victory in the key demographic in our last ratings book.

Was it because even a guy like me, who is described as abrasive on his best day, knew not to treat callers like idiots?

I loved Idiotti's obligatory yet pointless shot at Harrelson.  Will that feud ever end?

Not likely.

Harrelson sucks.

I do not read Mariotti, ever and haven't for many years.  Thus, this snuck by me.

I could not agree more.  I enjoy Boers and Bernstein a lot in the afternoons, but Bernstein has a tendancy to not allow a caller to make his or her point.  And that's after waiting several minutes on hold.

If someone takes the time to call, wait and get on the air for your radio show they should be afforded the time to speak.  Then you can respond.

Full disclosure - I love Boers and Bernstein and I hate Mariotti.

That being said...  B&B can be asses, and sure sometimes that gets a little annoying, especially if I agree with the callers they're making fun of,  but they are still EASILY the best sports show on the radio.

The fact that Mariotti threw that ratings thing in there is a laugh too.  If it's true there has to be some reasonable explanation... like half of the radio dials in the city were stuck and all of the radio repairmen were on vacation for the entire booking period.

Boers and Bernstein are great.  I really enjoy and appreciate the humor and sarcasm as it is entertaining to listen to and is generally somewhat sophisticated.  Personally I find it hilarious when Bernstein hammers some moronic caller.

It's that coupled with the fact that I loathe Mariotti more than any sports "journalist" I have seen in my lifetime.  I love it how he mentions that his own ratings were better, if that could be believed.  He's such a low life.

Dan and Terry had a field day yesterday about Kenny's quote that rumors are taking up too much time in his day.

There might not be a general manager that cares more about what other people think and say.  I wish he'd just do his job and not worry about the public masses of idiots that wanted him to **** quarters for Torii Hunter.

They all suck. I gave up on sports talk radio a long time ago.

Terry Boers

I think I'm done with Terry Boers.  Maybe Jim O'Donnell is right about him.....he should retire.  Boers is completely ignorant when it comes to the sport of hockey and Blackhawks fans.  When was the last time this guy actually sat down and watched an entire Hawks game?  Or actually even went to a game?   Last Friday, after the USA beat Finland...do you know what he was talking about?   He was rambling on about the '88 Olympics in Seoul, Korea and how he searched to find a restaurant there that served a dog meal. Then he was complaining that some people back here were getting on his case about that.  What did you expect Terry?  When you do stupid and ridiculous things like that, what type of reaction do you expect to get?  As a proud dog owner, I find that completely appalling no matter what the hell the culture is like in Korea.  How is that about hockey, Terry?    I don't need crazy talk from this bozo anymore.  There's a reason why a lot of people can't stand him.....now I know why.

It's like "if you don't agree with me, you're an idiot."  At times that's true, but not always.  Notice how they only act like that with callers.  As much as I despise Mariotti, maybe he was actually onto something?

It's amazing how Terry Boers is almost a completely different person when he's teamed up with McNeil.
