Cubs sign Frandy de la Rosa for $700k

De la Rosa, a 16-year-old Dominican shortstop, is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds and has a smooth swing from both sides of the plate. He trained with Valentin Monero and played in the Dominican Prospect League.

Baez has "top-shelf bat speed," according to one National League scout who recently saw him play. "I haven't seen that type of bat speed this year outside of the big leagues. It's pure, unadulterated, just violent bat-speed."

Can I assume they signed him right before the deadline, so as not to eat into their 2013 'cap'?

No this is part of the new CBA signings.  There has been a flurry of signings for the top international prospects today.

He has to change his name. How about Meta World Pestilence?

If he can develop into a .280+ hitter with a decent glove, I don't care what his name is... but I really DO like the name tongue

He might be more like 18 or even 19. Still, sounds like the kid has some very good talent. Just adding on to the revamping of the farm system. Good things.
