Season Trade Talk
i thought it would be good to have a thread that can condense every trade option as the year goes on. Here are the most logical players that could be traded this year:
Alfonso Soriano Ryan Dempster Geovany Soto David DeJesus Reed Johnson Jeff Baker Blake DeWitt Matt Garza Chris Volstad Shawn Camp Kerry Wood Carlos Marmol
My trade thoughts: (1) With Wilson Ramos tearing his ACL last night, I wouldn't mind seeing Soto getting flipped for John Lannan and a prospect. This would fill a gap for the Nationals and unload a disgruntled veteran. The Cubs would gain an established starter with the hope that his struggles are tied to his relegation and also gain a promising prospect (not likely a top 10 prospect). It is also would give Clevenger plenty of AB's.
(2) I just don't see Dempster agreeing to a trade. He seems to love Chicago and doesn't seem motivated to make one last run at a title.
(3) The more Soriano struggles at the plate, the more I think the only way he is traded is in a swap of bad contracts.
Baez has "top-shelf bat speed," according to one National League scout who recently saw him play. "I haven't seen that type of bat speed this year outside of the big leagues. It's pure, unadulterated, just violent bat-speed."

Re: Season Trade Talk
There's two lists there. Garza and everyone else. Garza is the only interesting potential trade to keep an eye on.
There's still two and a half months to go bofere trades are done. By that time, people will be looking at guys who are playing well then not as much at what they did in April and early May. Most teams are looking for help for two months, not the next three years, so there won't be much different that the Derrek Lee trade in value at the best.
Personally, that interests me very little.

Re: Season Trade Talk
Heyman article on Garza. I agree that the Cubs shouldn't trade him unless they get bonafide pitching prospects in return, as the Cubs system is very thin in pitching.

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/b...ning-any-trades +1 there simply won't be many top-of-rotation starters available for a while. Teams are being smart and locking them up.

Re: Season Trade Talk
I think we will stock up in pitching in about a month. then next year as well.
I hated JH But the one thing he did early is draft a lot of pitchers. if you have pitchers you can trade and get what you want in the field.
then he just quit and the rest is history.
This team is not bad. NOw I don't think you have to go out and give a guy a 20mil a year crazy type deal.
you have the sixth pick this year and probaly top 5 pick next year. DRaft heavy on pitchers and go from there.
Now I would not mind soto to the nationals for some good players. Don't just give him away.
I like him but we can live without him

This was a good idea mhum. Think I'll pin it and maybe we won't have a bunch of different trade threads clogging up the base paths.

Dempster has been quoted that he would be willing to waive his no trade clause if it would benefit the team. This is the year to trade Dempster. You will have decisions on 2 other players you did not list - LaHair & Samardzija. The front office needs to decide if they are core players or assets they can trade to improve the team. At this point it seem they have more value to stay with the team. The front office needs to project if they are long term performers or one year wonders. I would sign Garza to an extension. The front office needs a core to build around and Garza and Castro are the start of that core.

My list wasn't an exclusive list of players that could be traded, it will be a fluid list that changes depending on multiple variables. That being said I would need one heck of an argument that the Cubs would even consider trading Shark. You have a 27 year old with a sub-3.00 ERA that is relatively inexpensive. If he was a free agent he would be the exact type of player the Cubs would target. Your reasoning for potentially trading LaHair and Shark could be expanded to every player on the roster; the Cubs should be evaluating every player and deciding on whether or not they are part of the big picture.

It all depends on how much of a rebuild the front office wants to take on. But every player including Castro could be moved to improve the team. I think one of Hendry's weaknesses as a GM was staying to loyal to his players.

Re: Season Trade Talk
Trade Samardzija, are you out of your mind? He's young, seems to have finally put it all together, has an arsenal of four pitches he throws for strikes, brings heat through the later innings of his starts, and according to Garza has what it takes for October, not just talent wise but mentally as well.

I don't know about you guys, but I like the idea of having a 1-2 punch in the rotation. Been a while.

Re: Season Trade Talk
Selling Low - Alfonso Soriano, Geovany Soto, Carlos Marmol
Wouldn't get much back - Reed Johnson, Jeff Baker, Blake DeWitt, Chris Volstad, Shawn Camp
Maybe decent prospect - David DeJesus
Decent return - Ryan Dempster
Onlky if get great return - Matt Garza
Probably not approve trade - Kerry Wood

Too early to say the Cubs won't be buyers.

Re: Season Trade Talk
Have to say I hate threads like this. Now if anyone in the next 5 months brings up a trade scenario, the moderators want you to put it in this thread.
I see less trading with an extra wild card team anyway.

Re: Season Trade Talk
David Kaplan threw this one out there on Chicago Tribune Live. This was not speculation or rumor, just him making a suggestion. Dempster and the brunt of his remaining salary and Soriano to Boston for Josh Beckett.
"Winning is us,'' Brown said. "That's what we do at Illinois."

While it is questionable how much Beckett has in the tank, there is no doubt Soriano is running on fumes. While it would be tough to swallow trading Dempster (he is dealing on the mound, loves Chicago, and is on the leaders) dumping ~$10 million of Dempster's contract and ~$50 million of Soriano's for ~$40 million of Beckett's would be fine with me. By the way I don't think there is any way the Red Sox agree to this.

Re: Season Trade Talk
Another Nationals catcher goes down. They are definitely going to be in the market for a backstop.

According to an article in the Sun Times, Rizzo's time is near and the Cubs have discussed moving LaHair to the oufield.
