Brewers trade SS J.J. Hardy for Twins' CF Carlos Gomez

So do the Cubs go after Cameron?  Also I'm still trying to figure out why you would want Gomez over Hardy.

Because the Brewers need a CF (Cameron leaving) and they believe Escobar is ready to take over SS.

I'm sure the Cubs will look at Cameron(he's not a great fit because he's RH though), but I don't think he was going to resign with the Brewers anyways. The Brewers didn't want Gomez over Hardy they wanted Escobar over Hardy, and used Hardy to fill a whole in CF cheaply. Gomez is a pretty crappy hitter, but brings speed and defense to the team. So they will have him bat 8th, and hope that his bat improves or he at least puts up numbers like he did in 08. Overall this is a good trade for both teams since the Twins had too many outfielders and the Brewers had two starting SS. It's good to see the Brewers trying to fix there HR or nothing offense, but Gomez is another low OBP guy who's not gonna help much.  But I expect the Brewers to run with him alot and when he's on base they will try to get him in scoring postion for Weeks, Escobar, Braun and Fielder. Still he's a pretty big down grade offensivly from Cameron. The Twins buying low on JJ Hardy seems like a great move, hopefully he can recover and doesn't turn into the next Khalil Greene.

Nice deal for both teams. Now the Twins can focus on trying to resign Crede, instead of a SS and Crede. Gomez is promising, but couldn't hit sand if he fell off of camel. He really struggled the second half of last year.

Re: Brewers trade SS J.J. Hardy for Twins' CF Carlos Gomez

The initial question was if the Cubs should sign Cameron.

He made 10 million last year plus he will be 37 next year

He would still be our best defensive outfielder - has some power but strikes out a lot with a .250 avg

Next year Lee, Lilly and potentially Ramirez could be in the final year of their contracts.

So if the window is next year and we could sign him to a 1 year deal for around 5 million then I would go for it.

If he wanted a multi year deal or more than 8 million/year then find someone else.

Just use Fuld he will be good and is young.  He has been good at every level he has been at.

Actually he has been ok at every level, which means he will probably be no better than a 5th outfielder at any point.  Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see him doing much offensively.

Because he fits into the mold of the AAAA/Grindy type that Meatball fans love to worship. I'm fine with him being brought up for injury reasons as a backup outfielder again. And if he proves he can do solid at this level, then him being our 5th outfielder is fine with me. Anything higher and were in deep sheet!

The initial question was if the Cubs should sign Cameron.

The problem with Cameron is that he's RH. Yeah yeah I know people think that RH/LH stuff is overrated and it might be. But we know that the Cubs feel a having a good LH bat hitting somewere between 3rd and 6th is important to break up all the RH's. Right now Fukudome is the only LH bat we have in the line-up, so you have to figure we will be looking for LH or S hitters for the other two spots. I guess it's possible we might just add a 2b who bats LH to hit towards the top of the line-up, and just get the best hitter we can for CF or RF. But if that happens, don't be surprised to see Fukudome batting 5th or 6th to break up all the RH hitters. Maybe a line-up like  say Kelly Johnson at 2b, Theriot at SS, Lee at 1b, Ramirez at 3rd, Soriano in LF, Fukudome in RF, Cameron in CF and Soto at C wouldn't be so bad though. Even though it would be pretty righthanded. If not Cameron maybe they will look at Brian Giles to hit 6th or 7th and play RF. If they do I just hope his struggles last year were injury related and he still has something left. I do like Kelly Johnson as a good "buy low" guy like Hardy and Hermida have been. But we will be adding at least one LH bat this offseason I'm sure of it. I just hope that we don't NEED to get two and if theres a good RH bat out there and they can get him for a reasonable price they go for it. I do agree they need to get at least one LH bat though, especially with Fukudome basically a platoon player.
