Baez promotion speaks volumes IMO...Whats Next?

First this isnt your traditional cup of coffee in the Bigs...he is here to work and possibly work through early struggles in hopes he is a solid contributor beginning next year

I know its an exciting time...but I am not trying to sound like I am drinking the Kool-Aid

Lets look at what we have probably heading into 2015

First we have a good bullpen that should remain solid and has a chance to be better next year

Rondon
Parker
Wright
Rosscup
Strop
Ramirez?
Grimm?
Jackson?
Schlitter
Fujikawa?
Vizcaino?
Rivero?
Hatley?

A lot of options for the pen so not sure if we need any FA relievers...but there may be a trade or signing thats unexpected

Now the rotation...

Arrieta
Hendricks
Wada?
Straily?
Jackson?
Grimm?
Ramirez?

Thats what we have and theres even a few more options I didnt mention...but we need a TOR and likely more

I was opposed to a 6 year deal for Lester...but if thats what Theo wants to try I am in...but will be on my knees praying it works out.

Some solid starters could include....

Iwakuma
Liriano
Volquez
Cueto??? a long shot
McCarthy
Gallardo
Shields
Hammel?
Anderson

As you can see lots of solid pitchers and fallbacks if we cant land the ones we want

Also a few reclamation projects

Mastersons value has severely dropped...if we can buy low I make the move...2 year deal

Billingsly...another possible buy low option with possible high reward

Delgado ..my crazy idea lol...kid needs a change of scenery...lost his starting job...but hasnt lost his stuff...just his command...sounds familiar lol....a lot of potential here..likely to be suspended and fined by MLB for hitting McCutchen in retaliation for Goldshmidt...though was probably coaxed the entire way...a low prospect or 2 with upside should be enough for what he has become

And now the Offense/Defense

Now obviously there will be struggles....but even with the struggles I cannot see the kids being worse than some of what we have had out there this year...so by comparison I am considering struggles and defense liability

2014                    2015

1BRizzo              Rizzo     Push no significant changes

SS Castro          Castro  Push HOPEFULLY no significant changes

2B Barney           Baez     Offensively a huge upgrade...defensively could be a huge downgrade...still he has
                                            a stronger arm than Barney

3B Valbuena/Olt              Likely will start 2015 the same way with Bryant coming up shortly after...Again huge
offense but likely a defensive liability early on

RF Schierholtz/ Ruggiano        Soler      This one goes to Soler in just about every category

CF Lake/ Bonifacio            Alcantara        Giving this one to Alcantara...better offensive tools and has time to figure                                                                         things out before opening day...hopefully his speed starts to play

LF Coghlan                        He may split time there with Soler...but Coghlan has earned a chance to start next year

Now FA choices...3 names are at the top of the list for possible starting jobs.

Cabrera
Markakis
Rasmus

A few others who might be considered bench or reclamation

Seizmore
Colvin...wouldnt that be funny
D. Young   would be nice if he could get his butt in gear but a long shot
Jeff Francoeur

And now my biggest offensive addition...maybe u noticed I left Catcher of the offense list earlier...that because I am hoping we trade Castillo for whatever extra offense he may have...if any at this point seriously...and go get defensive wiz behind the dish...Russel Martin...is is everything this club needs and everything the front office pointed at wanting...but more on that in my other thread

Don't forget Yasmani Tomas, a 23 year-old OF who recently defected from Cuba and is said to have 70 power. I could see the Cubs being pretty heavily involved with him.

A few of the pitchers have team options that are likely to get picked up. Masterson and McCarthy seem like decent options if we can't land Lester.

(1)You forgot Travis Wood for the rotation, until/unless they trade him.

(2)Not sure they want Martin, but they do appear to have a lot of payroll flexibility. I suspect they will go after starting pitching first and then go from there.

Tomas is still up in the air...has he officially defected??? There was another Cuban OF talked about but he didnt sound nearly as impressive....Also I was high on Masterson at the beginning of the season but not now...you seem to still really like him but he sounds like an injury waiting to happen....I wouldnt  consider him a TOR starter like Lester anymore

Re: Baez promotion speaks volumes IMO...Whats Next?

I think Markakis has a team option?  Not sure.  Rasmus is a no way in hell in my book.  His best seasons offensively have come with a really high Babip.  Cabrera is still a maybe but frankly I just don't see the room on this team for a free agent acquisition in the OF anymore.  With Alcantra, Soler, Bryant, Coghlan and Ruggiano, I think that area fixes itself in the first half of '15.

The pieces are all there for the infield too with Bryant/Olt (still not dead)/Valbuena available.  No need to waste money there either.  Sink all your cash into Starter/Catcher.

I'm OK with the Martin idea, but the real tale is going to be if they can or want to land Lester or Scherzer.  My vote is still for Lester.  Lester, Arrieta, Hendricks/Wood/Jackson/Ramirez/etc., would be great if not overwhelming and you wouldn't tie up too much in resources in anticipation of what could be a deeper FA class at SP after 2015.

I believe it is a mutual option.  So, team decides first.  If they decline, there is a $2.5 million buyout.  If they want to exerise but he declines, there is not buyout and I believe this means there is also no ability for the team to make a qualifying offer.

By the way, as far as the pitchers who are likely to receive QOs, the Cubs would only be giving up their second round pick, so this might be the time to go ahead and do that, especially if they like, say, Scherzer.  This would not preclude them from signing a couple starters (Lester and Scherzer?), if they like them.  I agree with the posters who have said you just have to accept that TOR starters will be "overpaid"; there is simply more demand than supply, and that will drive the price up.

I think it's likely Masterson is hurt now and will have a rebound season in 2015. I wouldn't give him a huge deal but he definitely seems like a guy the Cubs could buy low.

forgot about Wood but yes I would like to trade him in the offseason...and Martin is exactly what this organization wants and needs...and if that means "overpaying" I am all in

What's next? Soler in September and Bryant in May 2015. Therefore by May 1st, 2015 the Cubs should have AA/Castro/Rizzo/Bryant/Baez/Soler all in the everyday lineup and none of them past their 26th birthday.

That lineup will score runs. lots of them. And that's just the beginning, Addison Russell may the best of them all.

Certainly on defense you have to think Russ, but my money is still on Soler to be the offensive star.

The national league has just a few short seasons to go before the Cubs start exacting vengeance for all these years of losing.  Just a few more callups, and a few tweaks, and the Big Blue Machine will be crushing all opposition!  /puts Kool-Aid downtonguetonguetongue

Yeah, it has potential to be a potent lineup.  Who hits 2-6?  Take your pick.

Matt Snyder of CBS Sports marvels at the Cubs future depth and contingency plans all over the diamond.

Re: Baez promotion speaks volumes IMO...Whats Next?

omg if these guys can hit the money we can save on pitching.

you could add two stud starters.

even if it just baez hitting consistantly that may be all we need.  you can go with the group of white 30 year old guys that  are on the team now.

soler playing right would even be better.

Aa in center. some combo of soler/the 2 best guys of the that group.

I like coughlin and ruggiano(?)

kalil still can do the job.

I like them too but they are 4th/5th OF types.  We need a couple more bats outside of Baez.

I'm good with a Coghlan/Ruggiano platoon in left next year with AA in center and Soler in right, if they sign some solid starting pitching

Man way of thinking has changed since the Cubs way of thinking has changed and they actually look to be going for it next year...I originally thought a bat like Melky Cabrera or Nick Markakis would be a good fit...but a platoon of Coghlan and Ruggiano sounds pretty good usless u wanna trade them...but if not theres no longer room for Markakis or Cabrea...Soler coming up n september surprised everyone...and now with Baez up the  OF may be set ...with the platoon in left, Mendy in CF, and Soler in RF....not to mention the Cubs will be in big on both Cuban defectors Rusney Castillo and Yasmani Tomas....who both could challenge Almora and Soler...Castillo sounds like he would fit in nicely at leadoff...but he is 27 already...both player appear MLB ready
