Jed called it yesterday.  It has begun, you know, except for us blowing our wad a month ago.

Re: Trade Deadline

Ramsey for Masterson???

is that a steal or has Masterson;s value plummeted?

Masterson has shown TOR at times...I dont like this

Also Lester appears to be on the move...Lester and Masterson will now be ineligable for qualifying offers...but since we dont appear to be finishing below 10 on reverse standings this is likely bad news...because now teams can overpay all they want and not lose their top pick.

Re: Trade Deadline

This Doubront deal is exactly what I was hoping Jed and Theo would start pulling off here at the deadline! Now if they can trade Bonifocio and get another starter like a Tommy Milone etc it would be huge.

Doubront is simply awful.  It's a shot in the dark type deal.  A total flyer for a young-ish arm.

I don't get the shot in the dark impression from this front office.  I would hope they would get Bosio's input before doing it, which admittedly would upgrade to calculated risk.  The plus side is if he turns into EJax 2.0, they don't have millions of reasons to play him.

Awful this year, yes.

But he was a 2.8 WAR player in 2013, with a 3.78 FIP in the tough AL East.

I would agree he might not amount to anything, but look at Jake Arrieta's numbers before coming to the Cubs and tell me you expected him to become a TOR starter. Here's hoping the Cubs can work their magic again.

I agree. The Cubs traded away their big ammo on July 4th which was fine because they got a great haul. Just going to be little moves. Bonoifocio might fetch something decent on the open market, be curious to see if they can somehow squeeze Nate or Sweeney in the deal as well.

Also very curious to see where Lester winds up. 6 teams are supposedly in the discussion. Boston's MO generally is to wait until the deadline so I don't expect to see him traded until tomorrow afternoon.

.3 WAR in 2012, .9 in 2013 & -1.2 in 2014

He is depth - basically a replacement pitcher

Re: Trade Deadline

I agree with you- especially on the JA comparison. His first 2 years in the AL were not awful, especially his numbers last season. Now this season, he has been awful.

Hard to say if he could blossom like JA, but I'd like to believe he is a lot better than Volstad or Germano (and when I say a lot, I mean A LOT).

Now if the Cubs converted him to reliever, we could project a sub 1.50 era based on his minor league stats!!!

Something in return for Nate or Sweeney- perhaps a washing machine or stocked coke machine for a year.

1. Did I say either one of those would be the centerpiece? No obviously but kicking in a sweeter like a Nate or Sweeney two guys that had success in the majors never hurts. Russell would also be a good candidate.
2. How many times has a player been moved at the trade deadline that was a hot plate of garbage only to watch them go crazy? Marco Scutaro for example was traded for Charlie Culberson to the Giants in 2012 and proceeded to win the NLCS MVP.  Hell Gary Gaetti was pick up off the scrap heap with the Cubs in 1998 and batted what about .320 for the Cubs down the stretch? It happens. Not a lot but it happens. Guys on a team not contending get traded at the deadline to a contender and suddenly go on a tear.
3. Coke machine? Washing machine?? Okay guy you seen Moneyball and read that silly article about Kyle Kover on Grantland the past few days. Congrats (it was a great movie) but please find some new material. biggrin

Let's see this was my first reference to Moneyball (and Semi-Pro for the washing machine), as opposed to a poster on this site who constantly tries to pick fights or uses a d-bag/useless thread reference in seemingly half his posts and I am getting crap about new material on a first time reference? biggrin

Can we say hypocrisy alert?
