To make room for Bonifacio.

Cubs will likely still need to make another move this week.

Whoa, it finally happened.  I don't hate Barney and I hope everything works out for him and his family.

+ 1       Barney always worked hard, played hard and did the best with his limited (offensive) abilities.  He will most certainly catch on with someone else, hopefully for him it's a contender and hopefully for us we get SOMETHING back in return.

This makes it SLIGHTLY more likely that AA might stay, but they still have to move another position player, either via trade or demotion.  Still hoping it's Olt or Lake, unless they can't trade Schierholz/Sweeney etc.

Good luck to Barney. He's been good the last few weeks. Hopefully he catches on with a team in the hunt and plays well.

I'm really going to miss his Napoleon Complex "Swing for the Fences" approach at the plate.

Not.  See ya.

+1    Darwin Barney could be an excellent pick-up for a team like the Yankees still needing fortification for thier IF defense (the Headley pick-up sure helped them out with the left side) or Giants. I wish him much success and thanks for all of the hard work he gave to the team. Hopefully he'll land on a team in contention and maybe even collect a WS ring (ala Theriot).

Re: Darwin Barney DFA

good luck barney you seem like a good guy.

he can play for a team that is loaded 1-7 or 1-8 in the A.L.

for some reason I didn't hate him as a player the last few weeks when he started playing again.  A few year ago it was man he is terrible as an everyday player.  confused

Barney was hitting .385 in 40PA in July. That is probably why you didn't hate him.

Barney's hitting last year wasn't near his career norms and considering the fact everyone seemed to struggle last year at the plate, I won't hold it against him.

He was a solid card holder but the future is now with AA already up and guys like Baez knocking at the door. Best of luck to Darwin especially with the baby in the fold. I am sure some team will pick up to be the last guy on the bench as a late inning defensive replacement.

Bob Nightengale@BNightengale ·

RHP Jonathan Martinez, 20, who's going to the # Cubs from the # Dodgers, is 7-5, 3.47 ERA, with 91 strikeouts and 19 walks in 106.1 innings.

The # Dodgers are trading RHP Jonathan Martinez to the # Cubs as the player to be named later in the Darwin Barney trade.
