BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

Confirmed by multiple sources now.  They are sending us Addison Russell,  potentially the #3 prospect in all of baseball.  No word if anyone else is involved or if we're flipping Russell for someone else, but WOW this is huge.  Both in the same trade.  Theo is the man.

Even better now....we also got Dan Strailey and Billy McKinney, who is their #2 prospect, an OF.   There is a PTBNL, not sure which team from though.

Re: BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

bangheadTheo just traded our #1 and #2 starters for 3 prospects. I don't care whether Russell is their #1 prospect, he just gave away 2 top starters for 1 top prospect and 2 other players who may never amount to anything. Just last year, Theo traded Garza to Texas and got 4 players back and Feldman to Baltimore for 2 players. That's 6 players for 2 starting pitchers and they weren't even the 2 best we had. He just got rid of our 2 best starters and got little in return. Sorry, I think it was a bad move.

News flash: this team is/was going no where. One guy is a FA after this year and the other was leaving after next year.

We don't know the prospect haul yet but what you're missing is that he didn't get an Addison Russell in any of those trades.

Sidebar: as a baseball fan, pretty cool to see the Oakland A's going for it.

Had to move quick. These guys were screwing up the plan - too much winning and we know that isn't allowed in this rebuild. But hey another SS. Like we don't have enough of those. But at least this guy is coming off a torn hammy.

Re: BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

bangheadInstead of Strailey, Theo should have demanded Millone. At least he is pitching at the major league level and pitching good, not sitting his butt in the minors. And Hamilton, though he is their #2 prospect, he is way down in A ball, and he is not even listed in the top 100 prospects list. Sorry, crappy trade for 2 top starters. Russell might be the only player we see out of this trade and he is a SS like Starlin Castro and Javier Baez, our top prospect.

I smell a trade for David Price coming soon. Rays like prospects too.

Re: BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

bangheadSpooner, I know this team is not destined for the playoffs, and I am aware that both pitchers are FA's, but he could have waited another couple of weeks before making a deal, especially closer to the deadline. Russell is their top prospect, but closer to the deadline, he could have pulled a deal from a more desperate team and got more/better prospects.

Come on man....

We didn't JUST get Russell. McKinney was their first rounder in 2013 and is just 19 years old. Straily has proven he can pitch in the majors. We're not ready to make the playoffs. We just need guys to give solid efforts as we move toward the future with all of these prospects coming. Shark is a good pitcher and I wish him well, but he's not a top of the rotation kind of guy in my opinion. Low end 2 or high end 3. Hammel? Having a career year and was a great time to sell high. I think we'll look back at this trade in three years and realize how great we made out.

As for the other moves, Garza was leaving two months after that trade happened. Olt, Grimm, Ramirez and Edwards was pretty good payoff for him. For 30 year old Scott Feldman, we got 28 year old Jake Arrieta and 27 year old Pedro Strop. Feldman lasted three months in Baltimore and was on to Houston. Arrieta is looking like a guy who wants to stick around for a while, wouldn't you say?

Its really hard to acquire a top 10 prospect. Doing it for 2 guys who have never made an all-star team is a no brainer.

Re: BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

bangheadThat's what I'm trying to say, all the prospects we got in those trades last year have a lot of upside and except for Edwards already are helping the Cubs and doing well. Olt is a former #1 pick and maybe not doing so well but he can put it together and be a nice trade piece next year when you know who comes up to be the 3rd sacker next year. I'm sorry, Russell maybe a great prospect but he is stuck in AA, we won't see Hamilton for 3 or 4 years 'cause he's in A ball, and who knows what we get from Strailey. I just think Theo could have done better for our top 2 starters, that's all.

Agreed.  And the danger in waiting is that you never know what can happen.  Shark and Hammel are at their peak trade value right now, but a bad start or two or a twinge in the elbow and their value can plummet.  Based on their track record, I trust Theo and Co. and think this move will pay off.  I'm sure they had other offers but felt this was the best package.  And from the A's standpoint, they helped solidify their position as #1 team in the AL and also took 2 of the top trade prospects off the market for the rest of the league!

Re: BREAKING: Shark and Hammel BOTH traded to Oakland

I also believe this trade let's people know what management thought of Jeff. Yes, he is a quality pitcher but they don't think he is an ace or maybe not even a number 2 guy. Cubs are loaded with infield prospects and need to spend some money either on Price now or Lester in the off season.

These are not top starters. Neither is a 1 and neither has been an all star.

Hamilton was their #1 last year and he's playing well at 19 in high A. Straily is a solid young starter with upside. And there's another guy yet.

This has been a nice stretch but this is a last place team. Nothing wrong with a lot of talent at any position. No one is blocking anyone at this point.

Billy Hamilton - Cincinnati speedster
Billy McKinney - 19 year  old former A, future Cub

Proceed.

Shark was going to demand big bucks and I'm not sure he's have been worth it long term. I wonder how Mann SS's we need though...

Cubs can probably make a deal for Stanton or a pitcher who becomes available this winter.
