Could Cubs lose McLeod

Could Cubs lose McLeod

http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com...mp;vkey=news_sd

Some in San Diego would like to see Jason McLeod come back from Chicago, where he's the senior vice president of player development and amateur scouting with the Cubs. McLeod had two previous stints with the Padres.

Yeah, I'm afraid this is almost inevitable.  Not necessarily with the Padres but someone is going to want him for their GM job.  I hope the prospect of bringing the Cubs to the promised land makes him to want to see it through.

If other teams want your front office people, that's a good thing.

It is not a good thing to lose your top front office people

Didn't McLeod oversee their system which ended up to be mostly hype? I don't see much progress made in his and Hoyer's tenure there. I'm guessing they look elsewhere

Reports have McLeod on their short list of candidates. He fits their need due to Padres low payroll/budget and a high emphasis on the draft and player development which are McLeod's strengths.

The Score indicates that it is possible that Josh Byrnes ends up getting a position within the Cubs' system, perhaps as an assistant or consultant.

It is unlikely that McLeod gets an opportunity with the Padres; if McLeod were looking to hire an assistant as the Padres GM, it would be Byrnes...

Seems like their new president wanted to make his own hire because firing Byrnes was premature. Their team is filled with some pretty decent young players and their farm is pretty deep as well.

I doubt they'll be after McLeod due to his association with Byrnes. More likely the Cubs find a spot for Byrnes.

McLeod isn't going to be a hot commodity until teams get a better gauge as to just how well he did with the

Cubs drafts.

Just because you have a long list of replacements does not indicate it would not be a huge loss if McLeod would leave. His value has been placed as an equal to Hoyer & Epstein during this rebuild.

Agreed, but Byrnes is their friend...I suspect they find something for him if he wants it.

I have seen your rants on this before.  Each time I have asked you how many people normally make up a front office.  Any idea on that?

I'd rather my team have a large front office than a small one. I doubt anyone wants to go back to the Trib years.

Well, the Cubs have given San Diego permission to interview McLeod for their GM job as expected.  He holds probably the most crucial position in the Cubs organization right now.  How do we replace him?

Easy, I hear Byrnes is available...

It seriously might be as easy as that. The ability of the Cubs to do a good job scouting is a result of hiring a lot of good scouts, using advanced analytics, etc. McLeod might bring good leadership or judgement to the process, but it is about more than just one guy.

Now, if he gets the GM position and wants to bring all his people with him...THAT is a different story entirely.

Byrnes had a different role than McLeod and would not be a good replacement. It would not be easy and one guy does make a big difference when it comes to who to select in the draft and deciding their player development path.
