Here's a quote from Dale per Jesse Rogers

"Sveum said Castro simply deserves the 8 hole based on how he's swinging and rest of lineup is swinging"

Brian Bogusevic hasn't swung at a MLB pitch since July 14.

Which means he is swinging the bat better then Castro the past month. biggrin

I still don't like Castro batting 8th though. It's extended ST obviously. Bat him somewhere in the middle no matter what.

Because that is long term where he is going to bat or should I say, better hope he bats. Whatever funk Castro is in, he needs to hit his way out of it. Might as well let him do it where he will eventually bat and not waste time batting 8th.

Again, the season is over with in terms of W/L (not that really mattered to begin with) therefore now is the time to really only worry about developing players and if that means riding Castro out during a terrible year and hope he finds it down the stretch again so he can springboard into next year; then so be it.

Batting Castro 8th is the worst place you can put a slumping hitter. Hitting in front of the pitcher will allow the opposing pitcher to throw junk to Castro.

Equally as bad as Castro batting 8th is Barney batting 2nd. A line of 218/270/595 should be no where near the top of the lineup - he should be the 8th hitter

Batting 8th doesn't prevent Castro from swinging at the right pitches and making solid contact.  Earn your way back up the lineup.  Works for me..

Theres a flip side to all that...pitchers will attempt to throw junk to Castro but if he lays off he will get pitches to hit...Pitchers do not want to turn the lineup over by walking the number 8 hitter...its pathetic anyway you slice it but Castro has the most pitches per plate appearance on this team...it hasnt worked out for him but sure why not...Im up for a brief experiment.

After the way he hit in July, how did he earn his way toward the bottom?

He must be basing this on one game, because they scored a total of 11 runs in eight games before yesterday.

It could be just a one-game experiment.  I think Dale is just trying to ignite something in Castro and hopefully lead to some different results.

Another double for Lake.  He's close to surpassing the fWAR of Castro and Rizzo combined.

In the last 28 days (26 games for Castro) he has an OPS of .521. I would say that earns him a trip to #8. Last 14 days - .488, last 7 days - .205.

Sveum says that Barney and his .271 OBP will get the bulk of the time in the #2 spot.  Explain that to me.

I can't--other than just throwing s**t against the wall and seeing what sticks. When it comes to Sveum's decision-making process, your guess is as good as mine (or his, for that matter.) crazy As for Castro batting 8th, the only thing that makes sense is that in the 8-hole a batter doesn't need to think much. You're not trying to take pitches to let the leadoff man steal, there isn't going to be a lot of bunting or hitting-and-running ahead of the pitcher's spot, etc...it just comes down to swinging at strikes and taking balls. Period. At this point putting Castro down there might be doing the kid a favor, as weird as that sounds.ohlord

Feels like it should be at least 6-1 Nats.  Rizzo, for his part, has left three men in scoring position.

He's bad with RISP.  The struggles of others have kept the heat mostly off though.
