Finally - this should end the Campana should start or platoon because of his great speed and he is so scrappy comments.

I don't like this move.Campana can be a game changer with his speed. A really nice 4th or 5th of. I don't know why the cubs give up on these guys.I really hope he doesn't get claimed but i would find it very hard to imagine another team won't be interested in him.Not only does putting him on waivers bother me a bit becuase i think you could of gotten something for him.

The Cubs will have 10 days to see if they can trade him and see what value he holds

Campana, Fuld, Dascenzo are all lovable little guys with limited skills who some Cubs fans have fell in love with over the years.  We need to do better.

Campana is a bit different in that his SB percentage is so good that he is useful on the team even as just a pinch-runner and defensive replacement. On a number of occasions, he stole both 2B and 3B in an inning, making it possible to score him on a sacrifice fly.

That said, as they have the platoons laid out, they have plenty of OF on the roster, which makes him kind of the odd man out.

Like others mentioned, I would be surprised if he wasn't claimed off waivers. Like Fuld, I expect him to carve out a niche on some major league roster.

not a luxury we can afford - fantastic speed but doesn't get on base well enough, no power, not a great defender

some AL team will use him as a pinch runner I bet

I was a little (OK, lot) surprised that they signed Schierholtz since he is a lefty and they already had DeJesus, Campana and Jackson on the 40 man roster. None of the lefties can hit LH pitching and they were forced into RH options as the 4th and 5th OF. At the point of the signing, Campana's days were numbered unless they went with only 1 backup infielder or 1 less pitcher. I'm also a little surprised that they have not found a trade partner for Campana. He can steal 50 bases with only 1 start per week. IMO, the more was to get a RH power hitting OF and keep Campana as the 5.

I liked him because he did one thing extremely well rather than a bunch of things below average. Sorry to see him go

Maybe Tampa Bay will pick him up...between Tony C. and Fuld they'd have a matched set of Hobbits!

It's a good sign when your team let's go of someone that some of the fans think is a bad decision. It let's you validate that the team is getting better talent wise...that being said, signing Hairston is still one of the worst moves I've seen Theo make!

So, it would be a good sign if the Cubs let go of Soriano for nothing, Marmol for nothing, Brett Jackson for nothing, etc. because some of the fans think it is a bad decision? Not following this one...

I think you may have taken that a bit too literally...  it speaks to depth of talent, these guys that had been contributers are now DFA'd because more talent is being added

You're the only one who thinks that.  Congratulations on your originality.  Indeed, 2/5 with incentives is throwing money away on a guy hitting .867 OPS against lefties, because we have so many outfielders capable of that.

My guess is that we make a trade in the next week and Campana stays put. I can't see us giving him away for nothing... which was one of my biggest criticisms of Jim Hendry.

My guess is they have been trying for weeks to trade Campana. My guess is most teams 40 man rosters are close to complete and he passes through waivers and is back in Iowa.

RE: Campana designated for assignment

Didn't mean to kick a hornets nest....I did mean that the talent was getting better that we will continue to see fringe players get DFA'd. The issue I have, is Scott Hairston is not the answer to 2013, 2014 and I would have preferred to see a Sappelt, Szczur or Lillibridge fight it out for the platoon and spend the money somewhere else. Maybe you find out that a Sappelt or Szczur are legit or at least tradeable for a future piece. Hairston will not bring any value in a trade at that salary except maybe a single A prospect.

I'm not seeing what's wrong with Hairston.  He can play any OF spot.  He hits lefties well.  He's dirt cheap.  What's not to like here?

BTW, I'm embarassed to say it but I still like Campana.  :-)  He's better than Dascenzo and Fuld.
