Barney a core player

Barney a core player

Jed Hoyer quote -

When we came in, Starlin Castro was the one core piece. Jeff Samardzija forced his way into that group, and then there’s Darwin Barney. He’s got some things to work on, in terms of getting on base. Anthony Rizzo has become a part of that, too. We hope Almora/Soler/Baez can be a part of that. We just want to add a couple core pieces each year, and then eventually you look up, and there are eight to ten core young players.

Do you consider Barney a core piece ? I think of him more of a complimentary piece to the team. Even with his exceptional defense he is in the middle of the pack in 2b rankings.

Year 1 - Added Rizzo & Samardzija stepped up into core rankings
Year 2 - Edwin Jackson ?

It does not look like the Cubs added a couple core pieces in their off season. They stuck with the safe approach of adding stop gap players that improved the team short term but not long term.

Hopefully Barney will make someone like Junior Lake or Baez expendable in a good trade package. I see Barney and a future good veteran presence on this team in 2014-2015.

Darwin Barney can hit 8th and play great defense for a championship team. There's no reason to expect his bat to get any better. He's already 27 with over 1200 big league plate appearances.

Geez give it a rest. The Cubs aren't going to destroy their baseball (and business model) to satisfy you, I understand you live in this dillusional world where trades for "MLB ready players" for prospects happen all the time and signing guys like Big Albert and Hamilton make sense based off past performances (something if you paid attention to what they were saying/doing, you understand they will never do that) works but reality says it doesn't. Luckily the Cubs are in reality and cannot get away with being for "Chease Headley before I was against it"! biggrin

Exactly. I said this before so I apologize for repeating but Barney is the type of player you can with not, not because of. But the Cubs still quite a bit of holes to fix therefore 2nd base is not a priority. Once they get long term answers at 3rd/outfield and round out the rotation..they will look at 2nd long term.

I happen to think the Cubs infield outside of 3rd (Stewart is a steady player if healthy but he isn't an answer for the next decade obviously) is shaping up to be an infield that can stay intact for quite awhile.

I think Baez is not going anywhere. That type of bat is rare. They better be blown out of the water with a deal to see him being moved anytime over the next few years.

Give what a rest - Hoyer and Epstein are the one saying that want to add a couple core pieces each season - that is their baseball and business model.

What are the core pieces added this offseason that fit Hoyer & Epstein's model ?

A. Starting a thread every 5 minutes about the same damn title.
B. Complain for the sake of complaining.
C. Giving the most ridicilous possible trades/signings and often talking out of both sides of your mouth highlighted by your "Chase Headley I was against him before I was for him" argument.

Seriously give it a rest.

You forgot to answer the question of core players added this offseason that was part of the Epstein/Hoyer plan.

Yeah really.  Hope Barney makes Baez expendable?  Not going to happen.

I did that for over an year and everything I posted he kept on replying too. He is like a child that just needs attention hence why he starts a thread that really never has any info to it and when it does, he stole it. And what I come to realize the past few weeks is wastes a lot of good posters time.

Unless Barney breaks into Sammie's supply of leftover "Fieldstone Vitamins" buried in the tunnels of Wrigley Field. biggrin

Stick to talking baseball -

Most seem to agree that Barney is not a core player

Epstein & Hoyer have stated they would like to add 2 core players per year.

Does anyone think they added 2 core players this offseason ?

Why not just answer the question ? The whole point of a forum is to have a debate and get responses.

Do you or anyone else think they added 2 core players this offseason per the Epstein Hoyer plan ?

Who died and put you in charge of the board? Besides, why answer your questions?? Nobody really does and when they do, you don't even understand their responses since like i stated in another thread, your clearly speaking a different language then most other posters.
