Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/cubs-to-sign -carlos-villanueva.html
Better than bringing Ortiz or Volstad back... a Feldman-esque, swing starter that can provide depth. Pitched 125 innings for Toronto last year (4.16 ERA, walks a lot of batters; 96 HR allowed in 657 career innings).

RE: Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
Love this signing, I think he has potential to be a nice #3. Just the other day I had a feeling this would be the next signing, not sure why.

Re: Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
he was the 1 I really wanted - pitched fairly well in the AL east so should be able to do better in the NL central - hopefully have for 2-3 years at reasonable $$$

Heyman says it's a done deal, but I'm done trusting anything the national writers say. https://mobile.twitter.com/Jon...544807850065920

Seems like another 5 starter, I do not know this guy well. Maybe another trade on the horizon. Help me understand this one

Re: Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
I imagine he'll compete with Wood for the #5 slot... his BB/K numbers in 2012 weren't bad, but his career numbers for BB's and HR have me concerned. We needed depth, so hopefully he can give us more of his 2012 production (at least as a swing guy, if not as a #4-5 starter). We have zilcho in AAA to contribute to the rotation right now, so 1-2 bullpen slots will have to be swing guys for us 2012. Not a bad signing...

Help me understand this one I think the thought process is that he has decent peripherals, won't command a ton of money, is moving from the AL East to the NL Central, and, at 29, should have figured it out. Low risk, decent upside, can never have too much pitching.

Re: Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
hope this is the deal Cubs agree w/ Carlos Villanueva for 2 year/$8.5MM deal with mutual option for a 3rd year at $6.5MM/$1MM buy-out # Cubshttps://twitter.com/search?q=carlbuttsmlb&src= typd still trying to get Jackson per rotoworld Jim Bowden of ESPN.com reports that the Cubs are "now the front runner" for Edwin Jackson. The Cubs reportedly are close to signing Carlos Villanueva, but it appears they might not be done after that. Bowden says it's down to the Cubs and Rangers, though FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier that the Indians were also in the mix. According to Bowden, Jackson is likely to end up with a deal in the "ballpark" of four years and $52 million.
pitching staff could end up being a strength

You can't go wrong with this signing at those dollars.

I like the Villanueva signing, but I am really confused by the interest in Edwin Jackson. I don't like that development.

RE: Cubs to Sign Carlos Villanueva
Nice low risk signing. If he's the competent pitcher he's been the last few years, fine. If he washes out, no big deal financially.
However, I always think back to how a big part of the Rangers emergence was when CJ Wilson went from being an up and down career middle reliever to a top of the line starter seemingly overnight. You see similar things with playoff teams just about every year. It seems like our front office is trying to find that next guy.

The Cubs have agreed to sign Carlos Villanueva, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com (Twitter links). The SFX client obtains a two-year, $10MM deal, Heyman reports.

I like the direction.
