Great, another "no power, no speed OF" to watch killing innings for us.

Re: Cubs Sign OF

oh great, isn't he the guy who had plenty of chances in SF but could never hit?  He'll fit right in.

After looking at his stats, I find it amazing that a corner outfielder who has 1,275 ABs and has only hit 24 HRs and drove in 123 over 6 seasons can get a deal for over $2M.

Hopefully the computer is right and this guy is about to take off.

Will we stop being so negative. This team is not gonna compete this year, we have to understand this. Adding a solid defensive .270 left handed hitter for 2 million dollars is a very effective signing. If he comes out and has a good start to the year, they can flip him for a decent prospect bcuz who doesnt need a LHH outfielder

Is Schierholtz great?  No.  However, he DID have a .826 OPS against righties last year, and he's at least serviceable in the outfield.  I'm going to judge him as what he is: a cheap and potentially flippable platoon guy who'll be an adequate placeholder in right field.

This one is very hard to figure. If he was RH and had great splits against lefties, you could think it was a platoon partner for DeJesus. I would just as soon see Campana playing every day than this guy. This move accomplishes nothing. This player is a borderline minor league contract guy with an invite to spring training.

So you non tender Lahair and/or sell him and spend more money on someone less productive. Trying to hard to fill a spot cheap in my view. They were better off to keep Lahair.

They are looking for defense first...lahair was a detriment. Pitchers figured him out after the all star break as well.

Good grief, back off the ledge.  You think maybe this is just a placeholder/4th outfielder for Jackson?  I think more and more that they like what Jackson is doing this offseason.

Did you really really think they were gonna give Bourne 100m?

i have to question how he completely changed his swing in 2 months since the end of the season. Dale quoted as sometimes it is not taught the right way. Huh- he was with Dale last year for months. It took Jackson striking out at a historic rate to realize he needed to make changes? Lets see him face some live pitching and have the K's greatly reduced and at the same time not develop other problems or revert back to his old problems.

If the new guy is the 4th OF, then who is #3? They have no long term OF as of now. Nobody is signed for 2015 and beyond. Awesome if Soler and Almora both work out for 2015- still leaves a spot open.

Call me crazy, but I think that's the point right now... like it or not, this team is not going to be competitive until 2015

not excited by any means, but maybe if this is the first time he has regular at bats he can put a decent year together... and if he does, he's arb eligible... so this is a good deal, if he works out great! if not, signing Bourne or Hamilton wouldn't make this a playoff team anyway

RE: Cubs Sign OF

Nothing like overreacting to a 1 year deal. It's not like they offer him a multi-year deal. I agree with others who have said that this is basically a holdover for Jackson since they sound still really high on him. Hell, he could be the 4th outfielder to start the season if they find something better. Right now, they are just covering their bases. Instead of signing Reed Johnson, they signed Schierholtz.

Some you please take a damn chill pill.

He is a bench or platoon player. If he starts in RF that put Dejesus in CF whose defense there is below average. Is Sappelt the platoon partner or do the need another value find for a right handed OF ?

Rizzo supposedly did the same thing after his troubles in the major leagues with the Padres. Hopefully we get similar results. Obviously it doesn't work for a lot of guys (Felix Pie comes to mind).

As for what this guy is, I hope he is a lefty platoon for RF. He is supposedly a very good defender and did have an OPS of .826 vs. righties. Vs. lefties...a DeJesus-like .444.

So, now we need to sign or decide on 2 RH platoon guys. One for DeJesus and one for Schierholtz. If they can find these equivalent RH platoon guys, we end up building platoons that get us an .820OPS from CF and LF with good defense.

Sounds good to me if they actually do it. I'm afraid they somehow end up giving LH ABs to DeJesus and Schierholtz. Why...I have no idea.

I am curious to see what they do with Sappelt. Does he become the 4th outfielder or they give someone like Campana another shot at it or try to sign someone to platoon with Schierholtz?

As for Jackson, I really think the organization does not want to give up on him. The reason being is that he is a plus defender with speed. The question is this. If he cuts down his strikeout rate in half (and that be a monsterous improvement for any player), what does it mean? I don't think Jackson is going to walk suddenly much more since he already is a player that takes his fair share of walks. That means he will be putting the ball in play more. Does that mean his batting average at the MLB level goes up to like a respectable .270 (to go along with an OBP most likely around .380 going by what he has done in the past in terms of batting average versus or OBP) or does he simply going from striking out to grounding out?

For every Rizzo that makes changes to his swing and gets positive results there has to be 20 prospects that try and fail. Doing a complete overhaul of your swing for a guy that has had a high K rate since college seems like a longshot.

I'd rather have 1 good player than a platoon option.
