Rule 5 Draft - Who do you save on the 40-man-roster
The list of eligibles I found along with a good discussion here: Chicago Now another good link here: Bleacher NationIt is a huge list (49 names), so you obviously cannot protect all of them. The first article lists whom it thinks are locks (McNutt. Watkins, Villanueva), close to locks (Peralta, Struck), and 10 more that are perhaps on-the-bubble. So, who are you protecting? I agree with the locks and with Struck. They named him and Logan Watkins their minor league players of the year after all. He has a limited ceiling of a #4 or #5 starter, however, so it will be interesting to see if they protect players based on 'potential' or based on whom they think a team would steal and 'hide' on their roster for a year, etc. Noone would need to hide Struck. He is ready now, though albeit probably not an 'impact' contributor. But a guy like Rhee or Rosscup...someone might take for 'potential'. I assume they will have their 40-man roster at 39 so that they themselves can poach someone at the Rule 5 draft.

Re: Rule 5 Draft - Who do you save on the 40-man-roster
While I have absolutely no idea while will be exposed, I have to believe that Theo/Hoyer will reduce the 40-man to 38 or 37. I doubt he will paint the organization into having to juggle the 40-man in order to make a FA signing or add a Rule 5 'maybe.' This is the time of year every team has to make 2-3 mid-range prospects vulnerable, and I don't see how our brass can behave any differently.

You leave a spot open for rule 5, because to participate you need an open spot. After the rule 5, if all of your spots are filled and you sign a FA, you simply DFA a guy from the 40.

You leave a spot open for rule 5, because to participate you need an open spot. After the rule 5, if all of your spots are filled and you sign a FA, you simply DFA a guy from the 40. Now, if there is a guy you don't think will be on your 25-man roster in 2013, it is not a terrible idea to leave him off the 40 now if you think he will not be Rule 5 drafted. Because in the Rule 5 draft, if you take a guy, to keep him he has to stay on your 25-man roster the whole year. Compare with the scenario above, where to free up a spot for a FA signing, you need to DFA a guy from your 40-man roster...there, another team only needs a spot on their 40-man roster to claim him off waivers, right? No need to keep him on the 25-man roster the whole year, etc, etc. At least that is how I understand it.

Sounds like we are at 40...would think we would want to be at 39 since we would draft so high in the Rule 5...

SportsGoblin wrote: Sounds like we are at 40...would think we would want to be at 39 since we would draft so high in the Rule 5... Found the answer to my question (maybe). From the CubbiesCrib ( LINK): NOTE 2 - Chris Rusin has Draft Excluded Status until 20 days prior to 2013 MLB Opening Day because he was added to an MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) after August 15th.Does this mean he doesn't count on the 40? If so, the Cubs may in fact have a spot open and hence can be a drafter in the Rule 5. I would assume with such a high draft pick that they would want to be part of this, but I guess you never know.

No need to worry about clearing a roster spot for a rule 5 player. If they draft someone they can cut a player.

According to Wikipedia (so take with grain of salt): Any player selected under Rule 5 is immediately added to his new team's 40-man roster; thus, teams who do not have an available roster spot may not participate in the Rule 5 draft.

Well, we have SUCH a talented roster that it becomes very difficult to make these decisions.

cubs2007 wrote: Someone has to be removed with the Feldman signing Well, you can probably remove Rusin, Coleman and Raley from the 40. Or pick the 2 you like the least and remove them. I don't think they would be claimed, but I guess you never know. EDIT: And there is always Ian Stewart if it comes to that.
