Sox acquire Hermida
The Red Sox sent Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez to the Marlins today for Jeremy Hermida, the Globe is reporting. No word on what his role will be; however, he still has two more years of arbitration eligibility ahead.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
Huh. Well, one assumes that he's the LF, giving them an option if they can't resign Bay or sign Holliday.
On the one hand, he's only 25 and was a good prospect. On the other hand, he hasn't hit in the majors.
I'm assuming what his actual role will end up being is backup in LF, RF, 1B and DH.

I liked Hunter Jones...but I agree Hermida hasn't been able to hit in the majors. Hope he isn't a replacement for Jason Bay.

Re: Sox acquire Hermida
He was probably making too much $$$ with too little production for the Marlins or anybody else. It's really a shame Baldelli doesn't seem to be able to progress physically as he's much more talented than Hermida. It's a key season for Hermida obviously and he either gets it together or he's going to be non-tendered by the RS or anyone else they flip him to. I just don't see him as a backup type OF as he isn't highly regarded defensively. Note of the day was GAmmons saying BAy has turned down 4y/60mil. I don't see RS going for more than 4y/70 but I think they would do 4/90 for Holliday. My guess is Bay needs at least 75 to sign first and if not he'll wait for Holliday to set the market.

Re: Sox acquire Hermida
This is my guy. I'm a big fan of Hermida. I think people underestimate the contribution of a 4th outfielder. The top two backup OFs on the Red Sox last season (Kotsay and Baldelli) got 230+ PA. Swap those to Hermida and that's almost a third of a season worth of PA. Not to mention, if the Sox fail to acquire a left fielder, you can hide a bad glove in left field at Fenway. Either way, I'm not capable of discussing this rationally because I'm so fired up about it. I'm getting his player tee the second it's available.

I like this move alot. He has always had potential, a change a of scenary might be what he needs, it also might make no difference, but its worth the gamble At the price the Sox paid for him, how can you not like the aquisition.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
I like the pickup.
The main reason I like it is that he has upside and he's a guy who works the count. Sox 4th OF have been guys with some power, but who swing at anything.
I dunno what the chances are that he manages to grow into his talent - some guys do, some guys don't.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
If he can revert to the 2007 version when he hit .296, 18 homeruns, and a .870 OPS, this will be a great move. If he doesn't, he is at least a serviceable 4th OFer - his OPS+ in 2009 was 96, so he wasn't really /that/ bad comparatively. Considering he isn't making a whole lot, will only be 26 next year, and the Red Sox didn't exactly give much for him, I like the move.

Re: Sox acquire Hermida
I'm just worried that he is going to be the replacment for Jason Bay. If he is a 4th OF, then great. But as our starter? I would seriously question Theo on that.

Re: Sox acquire Hermida
The FO aren't fools they need to retain or upgrade 3 bats in the next 2 years. If they allow Bay to go and don't get at least 1 similar impact player - this year --, they are making it virtually impossible for the Sox to compete for years.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
I kind of agree with that.
The Sox can win with an offense that goes 9 deep... if they can get one of those. They can handle good, not great, production out of LF if the DH, SS and C positions aren't black holes. Martinez takes care of C. They don't have an answer at SS - Gonzalez doesn't hit and Lowrie is still a question mark. The post May Papi is certainly good enough, but it's not clear that that is the Papi the Sox will have. And Lowell is a bit of a ?, too.
They have work to do

Re: Sox acquire Hermida
One part that scares me about the offence, is that their isn't a stream (or prospective stream) of offensive propects in the near future, with maybe the exception of Lars Anderson. Other than Anderson, there is/was Lowrie, Reddick, Westmoreland, and a few others, all of whom are big question marks. Even Anderson was a huge disappointment this year. If the Sox are going to get an offensive player for the near future, its going to have to be via a trade or FA, and FA does not look like it has alot of options. If it were me, I would resign Bay. 4@ 60 sounds fair, I doubt he will get more during the offseason from another team, unless its the Yankees. The bigger concern for me is Lowell, who, I believe, the Sox have for 2 more seasons @12M. It will probably be the most expensive platoon in baseball, but if Ortiz/Lowell platooned, it might increase the production from the DH spot (both because of rest/using the players strong suite), and then focus the attention to get a 1B.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
According to Cotts, Lowell's contract runs through 2010, which is good.
Jed Lowrie really needs to step up. If he does and is either effective at SS or 3B next year or in a kind of super utility role, that gives the Sox a 3rd young hitter.
Bay for 4 years is ok, and I guess he can move to DH if Reddick looks like he can play and Papi doesn't bounce back.

RE: Sox acquire Hermida
Re Anderson, he hit well at portland at the tail end of 2008. IMO last yaer was about adjustments. Some people chalk it up to the Lancaster band box effect, buy that does not account for the latter part of 2008. They will probably have to go 5 for Bay. I think he'd be solid DH and if they keep the aging vets to a minimum that should be OK. Say 5y 80M Boras is asking Teixeira money for Holliday, last year he asked A-Rod money for Teix. I'm guessing ~6 yaers 120M is the final deal. Which is the better deal?

Interestingly, about Hermida: He's younger than Ellsbury and just barely older than Lowrie.

Which is the better deal? 5/$80M for Bay is by far the better deal than 6/$120M for Holliday. IMHO the longer the contract is the bigger the potential burden and the more things can go wrong.
