World Series thread

World Series thread

So I'm watching the series and decided to go somewhere to discuss it.  I think to myself that there would be no better place than my old baseball stomping ground, BostonGM.  I must admit, I think what I find is quite tragic.  I expected to come home to old friends happy to see me (OK, I realize I was never cared for here, just allow me to remember things my way).  Instead, what I hear is *cricket*....*cricket...*   I imagine this is the feeling I would have had if I went back to visit my hometown of Pompeii in 72 BC.  No world series thread when the hated Yankees have a chance at their first championship in 9 years and our old beloved Pedro is on the mound?  Unbelievable.  In any case, without further ado, let's talk about it!

What a game last night from Lee.  It actually reminded me of the 1999 ALCS when the Yankees had the better team but the Sox had an unbeatable pitcher, so they won game 1.  So I looked to see who the game 2 starters were here, and lo and behold, I saw it was the same guy who won that game 1 ten years ago.  Quite a surreal experience.

I think Pedro's been good through 4 innings, too bad he gave up that homer.  Very competitive game so far, good pitching, solid PA's by both teams.  Hopefully the Phils can grind it out, but it will be tough.

It was a good game.

Wierd how both games had controversial plays. This seems to be one of those post-season where plays happen.

Game #1 had that catch by rollins and Matsui getting caught napping for a DP. Game #2had what seemed to be the same thing, but the ball was actually trapped. Umps blew that call...

I haven't really cared enough to watch the games.  I guess over the years I have become less a baseball fan and more a Red Sox fan.  If the Red Sox aren't playing, I am probably not watching.

Because the umps blow.

I was happy to see Pedro out there and felt a little sense of Sox representation last night -- esp vs the Yankees.  Still, I couldn't help but get filled up by the same anxieties I had years ago watching him in the post season vs the Yankees.  He pitched well, but had to grind through several innings and the pitch-by-pitch was agonizing at times, although he pretty much prevailed.

Was he vintage Pedro?  No way.  Did the Yankees have his number?  Nah.

But it underscores what Pedro is at this point  --  a once dominant pitcher who has had to learn to pitch solely on craft/wit and less on "stuff."  I think we've seen him pass along the entire spectrum, from a guy who just blew it past hitters, racking up 10, 12, 13+ Ks a game, to a pure finesse pitcher who can still notch 5-6 Ks (albeit in the NL) and leave his team in a position to win ... which is funny because -- regardless of Pedro's evolution -- it seems he's always just put his team in a position to win.  Sure, he's dominated hitters, but it never seemed like he was on a runaway team getting chock full o run support.  I mean, wasn't he the guy who carried a no hitter into the 10th only to take the loss in Montreal?

The Yankees are his daddy -- the 2003 Yankees.  And I would love to see him pitch forever.

Too bad he's most effective in the NL because it'd be a great homecoming to give him an incentive laden deal to return to Boston.  I mean -- while we're always signing aged/retreads ... might as well get one that can help his team get to the world series.

I enjoyed watching Pedro pitch. I think that he gave the Phillies a chance to win. It's to bad that they weren't able to pull off the win. I really thought that when he left the field he was going to tip his cap to the Yankee crowd scarcastically that is.

Well, the Phillies dropped game 3. Hope they can rebound and tie up the series.

Tough matchup for the Phillies - Sabathia is a better pitcher than Blanton.

Backs to the wall down 3-1 the Phillies and Cliff Lee has a great game and Chase Utley is having a great series. Hope the they can hang on and bring this one back to NY. 7-2 Phillies

Phillies won. Pedro vs. pettitte - Andy is on short rest.

If the Yankees lose this series, they will get creamed for the decision to throw Sabathia, Burnett and Petttitte on 3 days rest for the last 4 games.

I like this to go 7 - I'd like it a lot better if the Phillies pen wasn't awful

This is a situation where all hands are on deck. I'm pretty sure anyone who can pitch better be ready to pitch for the Phillies. Hope they can bring this one to game 7.

It is. The problem the Phillies have is that most of the guys who can pitch, you'd really rather not have on the mound facing the Yankees...

Re: World Series thread

Well, I feel like Pedro starting tonight is very important. If he can give 6 solid innings and the Phillies offense produces some runs, they really have a shot at forcing a game 7. I'd love nothing more then to see the Yankees be defeated at the hands of Pedro Martinez.

From deep down in my stomach, with every inch of me, I pure, straight hate the Yankees. But goddammit, do I respect them.

I couldn't be more displeased with the result. Well, time for the offseason. I'll be watching the Patriots, Celtics and Bruins. Can't wait for pitchers and catchers...

RE: World Series thread

There is a silver lining.

1) Sox are no longer the team that paid the most for a world series.
2) Yankees have spent $1.5B in payroll between world series wins.
3) Hideki Matsui, who for all I can tell is a good guy, won a world series, making him, I think, the 3rd Japanese player to get a ring.
4) Ozzie Guillen got to mumble unintelligibly on national TV.
