Why The O's Beat Texas and Why They Will Beat The Yankees

Why The O's Beat Texas and Why They Will Beat The Yankees

Simple really:
the whole of this team is truly greater than the sum of its parts. AND they are well managed for the first time in a long long time.

My only concern about last night's game were the strikeouts...too many of them lately. And last night was no exception....they struck out at will. The bats weren't booming but they still got the job done. As one announcer said during the game...the strikeouts don't seem to bother this team.

The entire team continues to contribute in big ways: yes we certainly miss Markakis...but is anyone even remotely unhappy with his replacement? A journeyman really, who similar to Ichiro...enjoyed an epiphany when traded to a legitimate contender. McLouth has been amazing.
Jones--a key sac fly. Made contact when he had to.
Andino--that blast to the wall--where did that come from? Guess he likes to play late in the season.
Manny--hanging in and getting that huge RBI hit with 2 strikes.
Saunders, O'Day and Matusz---nails. JJ was not sharp but managed to close it out. Reminded me of Earl and 'full-pack' Stanhouse!

We will beat the Yankees for all the same reasons. They will be tough and like this game, nobody will give the O's a chance. But I believe that gives us the edge. Imagine using a 5 man rotation in a short round. Why not. No one is special, yet everyone is special. Buck has faith in his entire squad.

Look at how excited ole Jim Thome was! Its a huge asset having him on our team this year. The O's have hung with NY all season. I expect a packed house Sunday and Monday. These are special times. Imagine--holding Texas to one run...and that on a rally killing DP. And watching Matusz dispose of Hamilton on 3 pitches was a thing of beauty.

While we may have caught Texas at the perfect time, the Orioles keep chugging along, defying all odds and all the baseball experts, who probably still have them pegged as the least likely team to advance.

I won't be surprised if this series goes the distance. And it will be a beautiful picture watching us celebrate in Yankee stadium.

O's will win this series. The 'real' playoffs begin tomorrow!!cool

We also have been facing top quality pitching for a week. add in a free swinging team and you get strikeouts

I was down on Matusz as a starter, but he has been outstanding out of the bullpen. The way he handled Hamilton was worth the price of admission.

I don't understand how he turned his career around so quick just by changing his role.

Maybe the pressure to get the W was holding him back. But out of the pen he's been stellar. There's no logical reason why he should have been as calm and controlled as he was in the situation he came into tonight. But he nailed it!

I can see it. Sometimes when you know you only have to give it your all for an inning, its different than knowing you have to be sharp for 5,6 or 7 innings. Some pitchers thrive on the short role and it looks like Matusz is one of them (so far) Clearly he was not a very good starter.

I think hitters figured out MATUSZ's stuff his second and third times through the lineup and he became more and more hittable. In his new role he's once and done to the hitters he faces.crazy

RE: Why The O's Beat Texas and Why They Will Beat The Yankees

After watching the two teams go about their business last night, I am going to change my statement of optimism to 'the Orioles CAN win this series'.
They CAN win it if they rise above some of the little things that have dogged them lately....beating the Yankees in post season is never an easy task. Our hitters have to do better. The strikeouts didn't hurt us against Texas, but they will against the Yankees. Yankees have an explosive lineup, top to bottom. They came into this series with some redhot bats. The O's haven't gone deep recently with the frequency we are used to. Chris Davis had a nice HR streak but nobody else.

It would be pretty simple to just say...we were in it till the 9th when our closer came in and got strafed. Game over. But it is more than that. I want to see a nice 'complete' effort tonite. A combo of hitting and pitching that sends a message to the Yankees that we aren't rolling over.
What I don't want is another series like the Yankees-Twins of recent years where no matter what the Twins did right, they lost.

I looked at Matusz fastabll # on the radar last night and 93 was just about every pitch and he mixed up his pitches. I was hoping he went into the 9th and Thome to pinch hit for Ford to win with a walk off HR but it is what it is.

I know Ed...I want desperately to think we can still pull this off....but you have to admit, last nights heartbreaker took a lot of steam out of the engine. Its like the baseball gods reminding us.....now remember Baltimore, its the Yankees you are tangling with...you know you can't win.

But I'll be there watching, and hoping.

RE: Why The O's Beat Texas and Why They Will Beat The Yankees

I believe strongly that this series will be decided by a HR. Neither team seems capable of generating any real offense. The pitching on both sides has really done the job. However there are so many players on both sides that are capable of hitting a mistake---it will probably come down to a late inning HR. There are several players on both sides way overdue to hit one out.

It will be a tough day for the loser. This season series between the two teams has been intense. I don't think either team has momentum. Home field I don't think is a real factor. Again, on paper, the Yanks with CC going would be clear favorites. He is their 'ace' and is expected to carry a big load.
The O's can beat him...at least the O's that used to be able to hit the ball. But the Yankees aren't hitting either.

So in summary: it will be a HR that gives one of these two teams the victory.

I think it's a mentality thing. Earlier this year, he was nibbling too much and not really attacking hitters. Now, he goes right after them, and he's plenty good enough to get anyone out when he's attacking. His only problems as a starter were between his ears.

The strikeout of Hamilton was unbelievable.
