do you scratch tillman tomorrow for the WC game?

do you scratch tillman tomorrow for the WC game?

I like the idea of having either Saunders or Tillman available to pitch that game depending on the opponent.  Assuming a WC win, that would leave us with the choice of either of them, plus Miguel and Chen for game 1 of the ALDS.  I like Saunders vs Oakland and Tillman vs Texas.

But we need to win tomorrow night to assure a home WC game because we lose both tiebreakers.  Traveling to Texas, okay, but to Oakland, yikes.

Because of the way TB is pitching, I have to consider the possibility of losing even if Tillman starts.  If I decide to risk it, I like Hunter for 5 innings with Jake for 1-2, and the rest of the pen for 3.

PS I am unsure of the status of both Steve Johnson and Jason Hammel, both have knee injuries.   Their availability for the playoffs would be a factor to keep Tillman starting tomorrow.

How would you play it?  And we'll know who our WC opponent is going to be before we step on the field.

Gotta get the home game no matter what, so you have to go with Tillman.

I think I read Hammel has been cleared to pitch in the playoffs so I think it comes down to him or Saunders depending on matchups.

For Johnson, the best update I could find is a tweet from Roch on Monday saying "MRI came back good, said knee feels a lot better. Will continue treatment." So he's probably not used again unless O's make it past wildcard.

I'd start him. If there is even a slight chance of winning the division, Tillman has been solid during this season that he'd be giving us a fighting chance. In a way, I'm kind of hoping we don't tie with the Yankees. If we do tie and we have a one game division title game, then if we lose then we have to play an extra game against whoever is the winner between the Rangers and Athletics tomorrow. However if we win, same goes with the Yankees where they have to play an extra game.

Personally, I would love for the final four teams in the postseason to just have the Orioles be the only team from the AL East in the playoffs. cool

Hammel/Britton/Johnson I think are the options for Thursday/Friday. Hammel if no Thursday.

edit: completely changing my thought on this. Hammel I would guess is the pick for a one game anything. Sanduers would follow Friday if Hammel pitches Thursday. Otherwise it would be Hammel Friday.

It's my best guess.

Throw the 2 seamer for strikes dammit.

Johnson;s knee is bothering him so I think he is out. I thought about it both ways; sitting Tillman for Thursday or Friday but thought about it the way Stephen says the chance to win the East. Lets just hope wherever the game is Saunders is on his game Friday.

I think Buck is going to go with the Vet - Saunders for the WC with Hammel waiting in the pen if it gets ugly early.

I am going to against the grain. I am saving Tillman for the next game. I think the chances of winning the division are slim even if we win. We could win starting someone else anyway. The next game is WAY more important than today game.

Hmm you're right. There's really no one else available if Tillman doesn't pitch. At least no one I trust.

The O's need to win tonight so they can host the WC game or the potential tie breaker game with the Yanks (not expecting NY to lose tonight, though) so there's no reason to save your bullets.

I hadn't thought about who would pitch today. But after considerations I still would skip Tillman and have him pitch tomorrow or the WC game and here's why. If we do pitch Tillman today and by some chance end up tying the Yankee then I pitch him tomorrow and Saunders Friday . Bottom line is if we pitch Tillman today and end up tied with the Yankees then we have the same issue tomorrow....Saunders on short rest. So I am going with Jake and try and set us up for the playoffs.

Johnson got nailed on the knee on Saturday. If they play tomorrow im guessing if Johnson doesnt go that Arrieta gets the nod as I dont think he has pitched in a while but could be wrong. There is only 1 option after him but I doubt the Orioles want a 19 year old getting his 1st start in the Orioles biggest game since 1997.

To clarify, Johnson was hit in the right foot but twisted his left knee on the play. MRI was clean. Still sore but he's listed as day-to-day.

Ron Washington has confirmed that Yu Darvish will start their first game of the playoffs.

RE: do you scratch tillman tomorrow for the WC game?

Its looking more likely we will play a reeling Texas team unless NY loses it tonight potentially forcing a Thursday game. We have no experience vs Darvish and he has been lights out in September. But what a team choke job to end the season. Texas looks like they might score a couple and make it a game again...sheesh.

Hammel says he is good to go. If that is true, then I'm okay with Tillman tonight. Hammel can go up against Texas on Friday, leaving Saunders vs NY Sunday. Monday Miguel Gonzalez. And then Wednesday and Thursday Tillman and Chen respectively.

If Hammel is okay, then I go with him tonight and save Tillman for Friday.

Buck said Hammel isn't available until Saturday.
