Lots of "News"
Roch "The Orioles have named Jeff Datz as bench coach, decined their options on Melvin Mora and Chad Moeller, outrighted Jeff Fiorentino, Chris Lambert, Jim Miller and Guillermo Rodriguez, and lost Sean Henn to a waiver claim." Moeller could possibly be resigned after the rule-v draft to back up Wieters. Not surprising to me that Fio got removed from the 40-man roster, I've said it in other threads, he's out of options and Montanez isn't. I've never heard of Datz but Roch has more info about him here.

Re: Lots of "News"
At least they got someone from an organization that had more wins than the O's in 2009.... Ok, maybe 5 more. At least they got someone you might be afraid to become the interim manager in the event DT needs to go. A little extra Job Protection from DT may be smart of him. I'd love to see that 40 man short list that Datz rose to the top of. Other than that, datz a great move. Whatever.

Re: Lots of "News"
Here is a disturbing blurb.... Along those same lines, Bob Melvin may go from being a candidate to be the next Astros manager to being considered for the Mets bench coaching job, says Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News. Rubin also reports that the Mets will name Chip Hale as their new third base coach after the World Series is over. Now why can't we have a proven winning manager as our bench coach..... the Mets seem to be able to..... An ex oriole that had sucess after he left.... that is what we needed.

RE: Lots of "News"
Mora played himself out of value this year. Henn, believe it or not was picked up by Toronto.... they are actually wasting a 40 man roster spot on him.... A guy that walks 8 men per nine innings and has never had any success in the ML's.

I just don't understand the DT interview when all he (DT) kept saying was how loyal Jeff Datz is. How about getting some folks with a winning background! Not that I'm against loyality but let's hope it leads to a winning record.

Coaching in baseball is extremely overrated... it really doesn't matter who the bench coach is.

Unless you are a barely adequate manager and your job is on the line and the bench coach has more managing (and has proven success) experience than you then it makes the Front Office decision to let you go about 1,000 times easier as a more than adequate replacement is already there and ready to go (as in Bob Melvin). It does not matter who the bench coach is from a players perspective but not from the Managers perspective (when his job is on the line). Which is why DT had to pick a loyal guy that would be a step down in his replacement.

There is no way Datz would step down if/when DT gets fired. Why would he?

Terps.... I am not sure if your last comment was inreference to my last comment. I said that Datz would be a step down from DT. In no way was I implying that Datz would step down. I am sure he would be glad to get the chance to manage any team....same as DT. For all we know, Datz may wind up being a good manager some day, but as of today, he doesn't have the experience to equate to that. If he did, I beleive he would have already gotten his chance. His only chance of becoming a ML Manager is the same way DT got his chance. My main reason for making the statement is DT's job is far safer in late 2010 with Datz as the bench coach then if Bob Melvin were the bench coach (i.e. an ex ML manager with a proven track record).

Why would we want DT to be fired midseason next year? That would be extremely destructive to the team IMO. You give him the full season next year and if there aren't better results, you get rid of him at the end of the season and look for a new manager.

LOL. I definitely read your statement the wrong way, sorry.
I get what you mean and it's possible DT is thinking about that but I don't think DT's job is any safer with Datz being next-in-line to be manager. If we aren't flirting with .500 after midseason, I'm pretty sure DT is gone. I really doubt he makes it through 2010.

RE: Lots of "News"
I am not implying that DT will be fired mid-season nor do I hope it happens..... What I am saying is that (big) IF the team is 20-30 games under .500 in July/August and AM is serious about his comment, NOW the Manager will be held accountable to wins (like implying he wasn't before the end of the 2009 season) ..... you would be far less likely to hand the team over (mid season) to a guy like Datz and much more likely to hand the team over to a successfull ex-manager like Melvin. It just seems that usually when a manager does get fired in mid season, he is replaced with someone already with the team, generally the bench coach. If we are 30 games under .500 in August, I beleive they would just let DT finish the season and replace him during the off season. JMO.... So what I am saying, that picking a zero ML managerial experienced guy like Datz to be your bench coach may help you retain your job just a wee bit longer than otherwise. Again, I am not implying it will happen, just my belief in how the FO would view it.... I am hoping DT does well enough that firing him is not even a question. With all the Ex-ML Managers not finding work, this was a perfect time for the O's to get some proven success in the dugout. Will it change the amount of 2010 wins..... probably not..... but it may put some pressure on DT to not let his clubhouse get to careless.... Or the hook may occur pretty quick. Again, jmo. AND we did not hire a successfull ML Manager to be in our dugout so it is a Null Point. FYI - I read somewhere that Clint Hurdle (a successful ML Manager) is getting ready to take the Hitting Coach job in Texas. I keep using the term "successful" because it is far better than "hope". As in, I hope DT becomes a good ML Manager. Or I hope we don't have a13th straight losing season. We need successful (proven) people to be integrated into this organization and it could have started with the Bench Coach.

RE: Lots of "News"
If Dave Trembley hired Datz just to cover his *** if he gets fired then Dave Trembley should be fired right now. You just don't run a business that way. I think it's even crazy to think about it. I highly doubt that's the method DT is doing right now. You do what's best for the team.

RE: Lots of "News"
In principle Bean I agree with you. But if I were a newly hired CEO of a troubled company (i.e. the O's), I would be a bit leary of hiring a VP with lots of successfull CEO experience. On one side of my mouth I would say, this new hire is for the good of the company and it is is my only intention. BUT on the other side, there would be a little fear hiring someone too qualified to easily replace me. Lets just say DT has absolutely no ulterior motive here. He does seem like a stand up guy to me and I really do wish him success. God help us, we need it. For all we know, they may have offered the job to a few guys like Melvin and they turned it down.
