The Evil Empire arrives - slay or be slain!

The Evil Empire arrives - slay or be slain!

This is it. Either the O's make it through these four games as contenders (3-1 might do it), or they don't (1-3). A split would keep the O's alive, but they don't end the year playing Houston, as the Yankees do. And Cleveland hosts Kansas City tonight, but Cleveland has lots of games left with Minnesota and the White Sox. White Sox went 1-9 on their Bataan Death March (Boston, New York and Baltimore) and appeared to be disinterested during most of their games in Baltimore)and I believe the Twins have lost 11 straight at home, with Morneau traded and Mauer concussed, so if the O's have any shot, three wins in this series would be a good idea.

Agree...this is an important series for the O's. Outside of the obvious (beating the hated Yankees) we can't give them either hope or another chance to leapfrog ahead of us. Yanks usually bring out the worst in the O's...but right now there is no time for that.

We need to get Nick and McLouth going again. Both are now in the .260's--their lowest ebbs of the season..and its hurting the offense. Also, this team MUST learn how to get it done with RISP.
And why does it seem like we always face CC...like he pitches every game! He's not having a good year but he does seem to save some of his best for us.

Come on O's---crank 'em!!!!

The O's (according to MASN) are 27-29 so far this year against the AL East and all the rest of our games are in division. Yikes, they better improve on that....a bunch and starting tonight would be nice!!!

At one point I thought Chris Davis was going to hit over 60 HR's this year.  Now I'll be happy with 50. But 51 would be betterbiggrin

What happened in the 1st inning?  They were talking about Buck and Girardi but they never said what happened.  They were eyeballing each other and doing a lot of jawboning in the dugouts.  I tuned in late...

Yes---and we sure need that. The stat was we were 5-56 with RISP over the last 6 games...before tonite.
Davis is hitting .222 with RISP since July 4th. Good thing Jones, Hardy and now Wieters seem to be picking up the slack. Davis is starting to hack at terrible pitches. I agree...it might be a stretch to get him to 51 HR's at this rate.

But first things first...lets bring this one home. 4-1 to the 8th. Another great start by Tillman...one of these days he will be rewarded with a 'W'.

Last time an O's pitcher was 10 over .500 this late in the season was Mike Mussina in 1999.

Uh-oh. 4-2 as Overbay blasts one. Lets stop this right here. In comes Hunter.

Its a bit sad to me that a game between the Yanks and O's in mid September...where both teams are in the playoff hunt and the park is half empty. I'm really surprised. Guess this rivalry isn't what it used to be.
Also whats the deal in Cleveland? They are also in the hunt and their park is almost totally empty. Only 9,900 the other night and watching hilights tonite...the stadium looks like the old Municipal Stadium where nobody came to the games. What gives?

I think I would leave Hunter in for the ninth.....we'll see what Buck does.

RE: The Evil Empire arrives - slay or be slain!

Hunter threw only 11 pitches to strike out the side. Wouldn't have hurt to have him start the 9th...and predictably Johnson gives up a hit to the first batter..which is NEVER a good sign for JJ. Lets hope he keeps Cano in the yard....Casilla muffed the DP darn. One out. Would have covered a multitude of sins....
two outs to get. Now gotta keep Soriano in the park.....and again no DP.
Now we gotta keep Granderson in the park......

Come on JJ--get this one....he got it!!! Whew. Deeeep fly. Tillman wins #16. JJ gets his 43rd save. O's announcers almost sounded disappointed when Jones made the catch??? (maybe it was just relief? Strange (I'm talking Manfra and Angel) I'm sure Thorn probably swallowed his cud!!

Only 17,400 in the house. Holy cow...what a horrible crowd for an important game???
CC is now 18-6 against the O's...good to beat him. Big win. 1.5 behind TB.

Last year, the opening week of the NFL coincided with a big series between the O's and White Sox in Baltimore, and the crowds were pretty poor for that as I recall.

I'm going tomorrow. Let's see if Gonzo can follow up on Tillman's good start and give the O's at worst a tie for the series.

Pretty sure that is why the Os game was lightly attended tonight. Washington probably drew a good portion of fans if I had to guess...and a 7:15 start time for the NFL tonight didn't help either, most fans probably prefer NFL Week 1 to MLB playoff races - if I had to guess.

Re: The Evil Empire arrives - slay or be slain!

We have heard it many times, but it was never more true then in these last 19 games.  We have to play them " One at a time."  I'm not sure who is the weakest link in our starting rotation but Gonzalez scares me.  In his last three games he only reached the sixth inning one time.  On August 30th against NY he lasted 4 innings, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits.

Hold your breath and cross your fingers.....we need every win we can get.

Last outing MiGo pitched well. I think they messed around with him that week they had him in the bullpen and goofed up his routine. We will see tonight. Yes. 1 game at a time.
